Customer Reviews
great for the price
Is there such a thing as too much Billie Holiday? This box consists of 10 discs and over 180 songs from Billies early career. Great stuff, clean recordings, but, no documentation except song titles. (Suggestion: go on line for Billie's discographies that list details (such as date, band etc.) Good deal if you'd like to really explore the actual music.
THE Jazz Singer of All Time
For my money, Billie Holiday is the greatest jazz singer of all time who completely changed the way music is performed. This box set is an amazing collection of the Lady Day from the 1930's through the 1940's. It's interesting and enjoyable to listen to Billie Holiday as she perfected her craft over the years. The sound of these recordings are in really good condition especially when you consider that some of these songs were recorded over 70 years ago! I highly recommend this box set - it has given me hours and hours of enjoyment.
Lady Sings all Hues
This ten CD box set released by the Documents Classics label
consists mostly of over 180 of the classic Columbia label recordings done by the great Billie Holiday at the outset of her career, from roughly 1933 until the early 1940s.
There are no liner notes, recording personel, dates, or photos save the cover picture. Each CD comes in a cardboard sleeve with the correctly numbered song titles printed on the back.
But the good news is that these are THE classic recordings that made her reputation and started her career. Most of these sides are done with pianist Teddy Wilson and various small groups of top flight all-stars. Despite Ms. Holiday's later won reputation as a blues/torch singer many of these over 180 recordings are of all types of songs, from slow tempo to stomping swing and just about everything in between.
For a very reasonable price this box set is a remarkable bargain and if you like classic recordings of American popular music this one is worth owning. Again. a bare bones collection but the sound is okay and the music makes it more than worth the nominal price.
