An Older VHS Favorite Now on DVD!
I used to do this workout on VHS and I'm glad Denise released it on DVD because it is a gem. Despite the macabre art-deco set, Crisco-Disco Muzak, non-existent cueing, and confused-looking participants, this workout is a lot of fun.
Denise bobs, weaves, hooks, punches, and kicks her way through the first 20-minutes of this 2-part program, followed by another 20-minutes of interval training (low-impact aerobics/kickboxing alternating with 5 lbs. free-weight exercises for the shoulders, back, and arms). I skip the tai-chi cooldown at the end of the first portion and go to the second part so I can do it as a single workout (another perk of having this on DVD). This workout really gets the heart-rate up and you can feel the "burn" all over your body. I am astounded that while I'm breathless and panting, Denise is maintaining a steady, effortless, reassuring patter (she is in great shape!).
The moves are simple and straightforward. The lack of cueing might be a problem if you're only doing this workout once; but if you plan on doing it regularly, it will become very easy to follow. Although some people dislike Denise's chatter and childlike expressions ("don't let your tummy ploop down!"), I find her to be very soothing during a difficult, painful workout. With nearly a dozen of her DVDs, she's almost like a friend who comes right to my house everyday and helps keep me in shape!
Fun, energising and addictive kickboxing cardio!
I had read some of the reviews when this was on VHS, and when it came out on DVD, I decided to chance my arm on it since I am a Denise Austin fan andhave enjoyed all of her DVDs thus far.
I was not disappointed with the intensity of the workout. There are two workouts on this DVD, the first being a 20min Kickboxing Blast Off (or something along those lines), which is essentially 20 minutes of kickboxing cardio, where short combos are performed for a few minutes each. In the first workout, she alternates combos with short bursts of plyometrics, and I'm very pleased about this since previously my only experience with plyometrics was in Denise Austin's "Ultimate Fat Burner", which at 45min length, isn't the pinnacle of convenience.
Be warned though - I own a lot of Denise Austin's DVDs, and I'll have to say that her cueing is at its very worst in this workout. In general, people should know by now that Denise isn't the best at cueing, but in this workout she is bad even for her below-par cueing standards. I personally purchase DVDs so that I can do them enough times to not need cueing and instruction, but I do know that other people are not so laid back and relaxed about instruction so if you are picky, then don't even bother with any Denise Austin workout.
Her cueing is better in the second workout on the DVD, which is 20mins of Interval training. She alternates a few minutes of cardio with a few minutes of strength training. Denise uses 5 pound weights, but I use 3 pound simply because I haven't been able to find any 5 pound weights in New Zealand (I have found a pair of 8 pound weights though, which is a bit strange!). Overall I find this less fun than the first workout, but my Mum really likes it because the short toning bursts gives a few moments to recover from intense cardio.
I always find myself itching to do one of these workouts, and probably the most pleasing thing for myself is that I always sleep like a baby after doing them; Denise really makes me work hard!
If you are able to forgive Denise for her bubbly personality, her bad cueing, and if you are able to forgive the crazy disco muzak and art deco set, then I highly recommend this DVD.
The potential is there
This workout dvd is great as far as the actual workout goes but it was lacking good instruction from Denise whose tapes are generally well done. One minute you are performing one particular move, then without warning you have to move onto something else with no notice as she doesn't count out how many repetitions are left to go, or what comes next (to get you prepared). If you aren't distracted by the exercisers in this tape also not knowing what comes next (some don't catch on right away while others have started moves Denise hasn't started yet) then the workout itself will help you burn calories and for that alone it's worth the money.
