In its third season, Home Improvement settled into a comfortable and hugely popular groove. Tim Taylor (Tim Allen, The Santa Clause, the voice of Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story) banters fondly with his wife Jill (Patricia Richardson, Ulee's Gold) at home, snipes at his assistant Al (Richard Karn, Sex and the Teenage Mind) on his TV show Tool Time, and discusses manly troubles with his philosophical neighbor Wilson (Earl Hindman), while his three sons (Taran Noah Smith, Zachary Ty Bryan, and Jonathan Taylor Thomas, who was the voice of the young Simba in The Lion King) run amok. In just about every episode Tim garbles Wilson's Iron John-esque advice; in just about every episode he mocks Al for being a lonely oversensitive guy, even after Al finds a girlfriend; in just about every episode Tim and Jill tiff over the differences between the sexes...and yet the cast, though sheer warmth and enthusiasm, makes it feel consistently fresh--or if not fresh, cozy.

Not that the season was without a few new faces: Debbe Dunning replaces Pamela Anderson as the Tool Time girl; Al gets a girlfriend, Ilene (Sherry Hursey); several episodes features some new neighbors (Mariangela Pino and Robert Picardo, later the Doctor on Star Trek: Voyager); the great M. Emmet Walsh (Blood Simple) appears as Jill's father; and a number of sports figures, shuttle astronauts, and former President Jimmy Carter make guest appearances as themselves. This is solid sitcom comfort food; dependable and satisfying, familiar but still lively. If you're not a fan of Allen's humor, this season won't change your mind, but many couples will see a little of themselves in Tim and Jill's relationship, and that's not a bad thing. More power! --Bret Fetzer

A great season. 4
Home Improvement lasted for 8 seasons on ABC and the third season by far is one of the best seasons I've ever seen a long time! The best episode IMO would have to be the part where Tim and Bob compete for the third and final time on the show. Also the best episode would have to be the 5th anniversary of "Tool Time!" I like Home IMprovement and it will be the best of all time!

Takes a little adjusting to,but a good set that represents a great show4
Being one of the biggest fans of "Home Improvement" ever since I was seven years old,it is great to see all of the seasons of HI (four so far,and only four more left to go)being released on DVD. While not as good as either the first or second season of this show, the third season of this show was just as memorable and entertaining as the first two seasons of this show--which is documented here,in a great shape of form.

Through purchasing this DVD set,you get every single second of every single episode from the third season of "Home Improvement"--served on three discs. This season introduces four new characters--Ashley,who was brought in as Brad's new girlfriend (following Jennifer,Brad's original girlfriend on this show),Ilene (the first real girlfriend who Al ever had,who got the honor of being Al's first girlfriend on an episode of this show),Tim's new boss (who was brought in as Tim's boss on this show, once the character of John Binford, who would appear back and forth on certain HI episodes, passed away;that was written in for one episode of this show that is to be found here),as well Heidi, the "Tool Time Girl" who was portrayed by Debbe Dunning. Heidi, who was written into this show once Pamela Anderson (the original "Tool Time Girl";Lisa)had left this show for "Baywatch",proved herself to be a good replacement for Pamela Anderson, and helps make this show just as entertaining as Anderson originally helped make it.

The episodes that are on this DVD are different from the episodes that were written for and aired during the first and second season of this show. While the episodes from both the first and second season of this show did a good job on focusing on the characters of Tim,Jill,Brad,Randy,Mark,Al,and Wilson, the episodes here focus a little bit more on Tim,Jill, and Al,than they do Brad,Randy, and Mark. This does take a little getting used to when watching this set--but with the characters of Brad,Randy, and Mark still getting an appropriate amount of attention through all of the episodes that are in this set,and with the episodes that are here being well written and funny, that is an excusable flaw. The episodes here do a good job at covering the common things that go on within a family--older brothers picking on their little brothers, the debate that men and woman have against each other about crying, typical family problems, etc.,and did/do help make the season of this show not going too far away from both the first and second season of this show. That is a good thing, considering the fact that it was an intention for this season of "Home Improvement" to mostly focus on Tim,Jill, and Al,while it still did find a way to give Brad,Randy, and Mark an appropriate amount of attention for this show as well, and to give all three of those characters either small or large (sometimes both) roles in the episodes for this season of this show.

When it comes to the question of special feautures and this set, there are, unfortunately,no behind the scenes feauturettes on this show that are to be found on this DVD set. However,a few sneak peeks at other old television shows, which are either about to be released on DVD or have already been released,as well as a sneek peak at Tim Allen's "The Shaggy Dog" film (an interview with Mr. Allen himself was even included in the sneek peak),were included here. Also, the last disc on this DVD has a little "game",entitled "Tim's Tool Corral". This takes some of the funniest moments from the season of HI that is represented within this set,and shows them over again--which is entertaining and worthwhile, especially if you feel a lot of nostalgia over this show.

Overall,a good set,and while both old and new/casual fans of this show will want to purchase the season DVDS for this show in their original order of release and watch them in the original order of release as well, what you have here is an entertaining DVD for one of America's most entertaining shows, which,as we all know, has no new episodes of it running.
