Product Description

*** 2 DVD set *** THE BRAVE: Johnny Depp made his debut as a director and screenwriter with this allegorical tale of the plight of Native Americans. Raphael (Depp) is an alcoholic American Indian who lives in a hovel near a junkyard with his wife Rita (Elpidia Carillo) and his children Frankie (Cody Lightning) and Marta (Nicole Mancera); he scrapes together a meager living rescuing potentially salable items from the rubbish. Desperate to raise money, Raphael arranges to meet a wealthy man named McCarthy (Marlon Brando), who makes him an unusual offer: he'll pay Raphael $50,000 to appear in a film in which he's beaten to death by a gang of rednecks. The murder in the film will not be faked; if he takes the role, Raphael will suffer a painful demise in front of the camera. Raphael accepts, hoping the money will help Rita build a better life for their children. For the next seven days, Raphael tries to enjoy his last week on Earth and teach Frankie something of his new responsibilities as the man of the house. Punk rock icon Iggy Pop composed the film's score. (118 minutes). PIANO 2 (aka THE MAN WHO CRIED) Fans of the testudinate pace and art-house vibe of writer-director Sally Potter's other works (Orlando, The Tango Lesson) will likely enjoy The Man Who Cried. Fegele (Christina Ricci) is a Russian Jew separated from her father as a child. Raised as "Susie" by an English family, she makes her way to Paris, where although the city's multiculturalism is vibrant, the Nazis are already on the rise and the secret of her origin becomes increasingly dangerous. The cast of The Man Who Cried is excellent; Cate Blanchett, Johnny Depp, John Turturro, and Harry Dean Stanton all do fine jobs in what could have easily degenerated into an accentfest. Depp and Ricci do very well with minimal dialogue--both go through the entire movie almost without speaking. --Ali Davis (100 minutes) *** 2 DVD SET *** IMPORTED FROM SOUTH KOREA *** ORIGINAL ENGLISH SOUNDTRACK ***

Great Little Films4
The review stating that The Brave has a glitch in its smooth play on a DVD player was submitted well before I purchased this set myself. I took a chance, and for that I was rewarded with a perfectly functional two-disc set. Both films play perfectly on the DVD player. Perhaps it was simply a bad print on the previous reviewer's disc.

Both films are excellent, the acting shines, and if you are a fan of either Johnny Depp or of the Indie film genre (or both) then this set is definitely for you. Do not expect great action sequences or explosions, this is not Pirates. This is film brought down to its most basic layers: good script and superb acting.

THE BRAVE is one of Depp's best movies. 5
These days when I watch a movie I find myself unable to suspend my disbelief and get into the story. What I mean is that I'm constantly aware that I'm watching a movie. This was a movie where I was able to loose myself in the story. I felt like I was really watching a man taking a desperate measure to save his family. In the film, Depp's character makes a deal to sell himself to some men who want to make him the star of their Snuff film. I felt myself being able to wonder what such a situation would be like as I watched Depp playing the character and I found myself actually hoping he would find a way out of his situation. Whether he got out of it or not I will not say as to do so would ruin the movie to an extent. WIth all the garbage that Hollywood produces it's a shame that a great film like this isn't released in the states. When I bought The Brave it came with another Depp movie called the PIANO II as part of a two pack. For me pursonally, the PIANO II was one of the biggest peices of crap I've seen in awhile but I got both movies for a price that I would have gladly paid for THE BRAVE DVD by itself.

The Brave - A compelling depiction of devoir and sacrifice5
This is a positively overwhelming depiction of bravery and tenderness. The quiet fear Johnny Depp expresses in the first trip to the warehouse is perfect. I was so tense at the warehouse scenes my stomach was in a knot. My whole body was tense the entire movie. Johnny Depp managed to produce a suspensful thriller with no loud noises, no crashing vehicles and very little gore. It's brilliant with a David Lynch-like quality, sprinkled with playfullness. Definitely buy and watch this, even if you're not a Johnny Depp groupie. And if you are a groupie, he's in almost every scene. I read a review which said this was a slow-moving picture. Those with this opinion must be jaded people with no empathy.
