Album Description
Chill-out DJ Phil Mison presents his debut solo project. Inspired by his sessions at Café del Mar, Cantoma’s Balearic rhythms transport you to the warm beaches of Spain. Deeply rooted in flamenco, dub and asian influences, Cantoma’s sound weaves together a unique tapestry of musical cultures and features guest vocalists Pathaan, Tanja Thulau, Silvana Malta, Tony Sayer, and the Spanish Choir from Istanbul.

Cantoma is the nom-de-spin of pioneering producer/DJ Phil Mison. His career began at the Milk Bar in London during the early nineties. He began his journey into world prominence by submitting a homemade mixed tape to Underworld's Darren Emerson and solidified his reputation via tours with Leftfield and other bands. The tunes on this collection were inspired by the work of Cafe del Mar's Jose Padilla, whose legendary soundscapes so perfectly reflected fun and games on the Spanish Isle of Ibiza, an upscale yet decadent international vacation spot. Composed and produced by Mison, the eleven tracks are a chilled-out melange of Spanish guitars, reggae-influenced bass lines, quotes from sixties bossa nova, Parisian accordions, Latin percussion, wandering easy-on-the-ears male and female voices and spacey electronica; creating a sexy yet relaxed environment that renders the listener relaxed, alert and willing to travel wherever the music goes. Augmented by guest stints from DJ Pathaan (who produced the groundbreaking Global Sunset series), French jazz producer Christophe Gaze, trumpet player Steve H, violinist Andreas Gyarfos, and singers Silvana Malta, Tanja Thulau and Tony Sayer, the mood of the set is sophisticated, exotic and close-to-the-bone, mutable yet cohesive. --Christina Roden
Customer Reviews
exotic and uncliched
yes, im using that word 'exotic', because this music is quiet literaly, exotic. Tracks like 'Essarai' drown out the empty noises at work and fill my head with visions of swaying green palm trees, milky clouds touching the amber red horizon that meets the island shores filled with white sand and windswept cliffs. Yes, I'm babbling, but I know im not the only one who feels the surreal beauty of this music.
Expertly crafted to be an unboring and sophisticated chillout music. Perfect for laying out in a hammock, lovemaking or staring at at distant sunsets.
Amazing, nigh perfect album. Only one thing keeps it from being a holy grail...
...Track 9, The Call. For me, it just doesn't jive with all the other songs, and keeps it from being a CD grail... a "fire and forget" CD. A CD that you can really just toss in and not have to worry about that one or two tracks that you always want to skip past to get to the good ones. I truly, truly wish it would have just been removed.
Apart from that, you have 9 smooth, downtempo, laid back tracks. Production values are high. Every other track are ones I can listen to over and over again. It makes you feel like you're on a secluded beach in the carribean or Bora Bora in a beachhouse on the back deck, looking out on the water as the sun sets. The lush beats, the smooth sounds, everything works together. A polished album.
Just perfect. In spite of track 9, it's perfect. I have 80+ CDs, but there's always a spot in my player for it. Buy it. Get a copy for your friends. I have. It's just that good.
Perfection
This album is amazing from start to finish and it perfectly flows from one track to another effortlessly. The whole album is great but some of the notable songs are the spanish guitar splashed Marisi as well as Essarai and a nice dub influenced Overtime.
Phil Mison fused together an exotic masterpiece that makes you feel like you're at an outside lounge bar in Madrid and your only concern is when your next martini will be brought to you buy that hot spanish waitress. A wonderfully sophisticated downtempo/chill mix that makes you feel like you never have to leave the land of sun, sangria, and nice breezes.
