"CHERRY" ON TOP!!!
Lisa Shaw is the recognizable voice on a lot of the Naked Music releases and has collaborated with numerous producers on that record label. If you're a regular club goer, you may have even heard her voice on a few songs while out on the dance floor. Finally this "house diva" has gone solo, as I knew she eventually would, and her release is as sweet as the fruit it's penned after. Shaw's vocals are still smooth as usual with some very quiet-storm-on-the-border-funk grooves added for good measure. Don't expect a house-music fest on "Cherry", though--The music here is indeed as one reviewer stated, for grown-ups. Unfortunately, there's nothing here that hasn't been heard before, and sometimes the songs do sound a little uninspired and blase. Without a doubt--and I'm sure other fans of hers will agree--Lisa really shines when she's crooning over a funky house track. Perhaps this release would've been a little more amazing if she would have had a track or two (or three or four) produced by personal fave Miguel Migs. For the most part, "Cherry" is a decent solo release from a lady who has one of the most beautiful voices on the planet!
This is for the grown-ups...
Respect to those who miss the presence of Miguel Migs and the historic '90s-era Naked sound, BUT...my dear friends you are missing the point. This is not supposed to be another "Nude Dimensions" dance disc. It's supposed to be a full-length album that shows the true range of Ms. Shaw's talents, and it succeeds brilliantly. This full-on soul/r&b/electronic journey is intimate, sexy, and, in this reviewer's opinion, just sublime all the way through. Ms. Shaw's voice is always front and center, like she's right there beside you. The music, the beats never overpower her. Instead, they give her a perfect platform to shine. Jay Denes and Eric Stamile, you guys have done such a marvelous job here - not a note, not a sound out of place. Hard to choose my favorite tracks - this record just has so much to offer, from the melancholy "when i" to the uplifting "grown apart," to the low-down and sleazy "born to fly" and the fabulous, dreamy treatment of "always" (which gives that classic another three years of life). The one word that describes this whole record better than any other is TASTE. If you crave nonstop club beats, buy the remixes - I'm sure they'll be brilliant. But don't for a moment tear down this brilliant record just because it has a broader canvas than the average Bare Essentials mix. Open your mind, and your heart, to this gifted singer and her ace production team...and you will be rewarded many, many times over.
Check out the remixes!
If it's that Naked Music sound you're after, check out the Cherry remixes coming out Nov. 15. You can get them iTunes NOW! The Miguel Migs Salted Vocal remix ROCKS! Lisa's Cherry album is more mellow than the remixes, of course, but that voice...! Buy the album and curl up with your honey. You won't be sorry.
