Customer Reviews
"What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?"
"Maybe it's much too early in the game
Oh, but I thought I'd ask you just the same
What are you doing New Year's,
New Year's Eve?"
This newly released 2006 CD is a compilation of some of the best-loved Christmas songs of all-time consisting of eighteen tracks that are done in soulfully charming renditions by an impressive line-up of R&B stars with the most distinctively outstanding voices in the world of music. Most of them have strings of million-selling albums and top hits to their credits.
The Temptations opens up serenely with "Silent Night," followed by Luther Vandross' beguiling version of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas." And this holiday classic collection wraps up with Otis Redding's emotive interpretation of "White Christmas."
Who wouldn't be enchanted by Al Jarreau's take on "The Christmas Song" - to me, this is the most beautiful version of all-time and one of the greatest treats Christmas is made of. Thanks to Mel Tormé and Robert Wells for composing and writing this radiantly eternal Christmas carol. My Christmas would not be complete without listening to this song, which Al Jarreau "inherited" from Nat King Cole.
While Charles Brown is singing "Please Come Home For Christmas," Al Green promises and sings "I'll Be Home For Christmas."
Natalie Cole, in her inimitable bluesy style, gives her heart and soul to make "Merry Christmas Baby" one of the standouts from among the tracks. The "Queen of Soul" Aretha Franklin leads us to a "Winter Wonderland" while The O'Jays laments that "Christmas Ain't Christmas Without The One You Love."
The Stylistics' "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' "It's Christmas Time," Isaac Hayes "The Mistletoe And Me," Joe Tex' "I'll Make Every Day Christmas (For My Woman)" and "This Christmas" by Donny Hathaway are all sounding so stylish with fresh arrangements and remarkable renditions.
"25th of Last December" has an achingly beautiful lyrics and Roberta Flack's style of singing truly gives justice to the song. The Whispers greet everyone "Happy Holidays To You" while The Supremes shine as they give "Silver Bells" a charming take.
Moreover, I'm simply blown away by a soul diva, Patti LaBelle singing so elegantly a Frank Loesser classic, "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" It's one of my seasonal favorites of all-time.
"Wonder whose arms will hold you good and tight
When it's exactly twelve o'clock that night
Welcoming in the New Year
New Year's Eve
Maybe I'm crazy to suppose
I'd ever be the one you chose
Out of the thousand invitations
You received
Ooh, but just in case I stand one little chance
Here comes the jackpot question in advance
What are you doing New Year's
New Year's Eve?"
Whatever you will be doing on New Year's Eve, celebrate in style, make it very memorable and . . . be safe.
Happy Holidays!
