Editorial Reviews

Album Description
Time Life is proud to present a complete and unique edition of Johnny Cash's Sun recordings. Johnny came to Sun in 1955 with a sound that he neither altered nor bettered. During his three years there he wrote and recorded many of his best-known songs, songs like "I Walk The Line" and "Folsom Prison Blues", which he would sing for the remainder of his long, impressive career. What you'll find on Johnny Cash: The Complete Sun Recordings 1955-58 is one version of every song that Johnny Cash recorded at Sun, usually in the least dubbed form available. A unique celebration of the beginning of one of the great careers in American music!

Customer Reviews

Its like you are there with Cash at the very Beginning 5
I have always been a causal listener to Cash - even saw him live in Nashville twice in the mid - 90's. He was always amazing but i never knew the history of the Man in black or how he even came to become know as the man in black. When i was searching something about Colin Escot i came arcoss this release. If you dont know Colin he is an amazing writer/historian. I saw a bit of the liner notes and was shocked at how intrigued i was at stuff that was going on in the time when Johnny Cashes career was being shaped (over ten years before i was born i may add!) I had to get this right away to finish the story of his amazing life at this time period. Let me tell you i was NOT dissappointed. I popped on the first of the three discs and started reading the booklet. THE 40 PLUS PAGE Booklet! It is filled with so much history and pictures of when Cash was getting started and so young. There are great stories about how Cash came up with Folsom Prison Blues, how he was still working a job as an appliance sales man (a bad one he admitted!) and many more. The art and booklet is great but the music - wow - the music. I have heard I Walk The Line, Wreck Of The old 97, Folsom prison Blues, etc but im not sure if i have heard these orginal versions or not. they seem so much clearer and real. The demos are pretty cool as well. Its a great release and i hope the upcoming movie does the justice that this does to Cash who deserves it.

Essential Cash and Perkins5
Luther Perkins and Johnny Cash put together 61 songs during their three
years at Sun Records. They are all here and there is not one bad one on the
set. I know that sounds silly but every song leads into the next and leaves
you both satisfied and wanting more at the same time. They also included
these cool 'false starts' on some of the songs which I thought would take
away from them but it actually adds to the song - makes you feel a part of
the recording. Some are just Cash with a guitar. Great set. Incredible to
think these recordings are over 50 years old.

Perfect Collection Without Overdubs5
From the liner notes:

"After Johnny left Sun, many of these recordings were overdubbed in different ways. Choruses, additional instruments, echo, and applause were added at various times. However, as Johnny proved during his last years, nothing beats the sound of Johnny Cash with just the simplest of backings. And so, for this collection, we have removed virtually all the overdubs, allowing you to hear the Sun recordings exactly as they were first captured."

Buy this collection today!!! One version of every song recorded by Johnny Cash at Sun, in the least dubbed form available. Perfect!
