Wetton's big mouth5
The reason John Wetton was not in the band for this show was simple. Upon the release of Alpha the band held a press confrence live via sattalite and during the interview witch was also used to promote this upcoming cable special someone asked John what he thought of Yes. He simply said that he had heard of them when he was asked again once again he said he had heard of them. Everyone found this funny except for Steve Howe. A couple of weeks later when this show happened Wetton was out and Greg Lake was in. This didn't go over well with Carl Palmer and John Wetton was voted back in by everyone except Howe who then left the band.

Wetton not here but does anyone really notice ?5
Why on earth Wetton left before a worldwide simulcast of this concert on MTV is anyone's guess, but clearly the band was still very tight. Steve Howe stands out as the highlight for me. Many songs here show his improvisational skills in a commercial style band. John Wetton whose backround is clearly in Progressive music, bit the bullet and began writing commercial related songs. Steve Contributed to the first album and some of the seldom heard songs on the first album (Time and Time again, One Step closer), are co-written by Howe. This tour promoted the then released Alpha.
This concert was energetic and Steve seemed to have led the band on stage which worked extreemly well. It was just after this concert period that John Wetton returned and called a meeting stating he could not work with Steve. Steve left the band shortly after and the band was never the same nor reached the same commercial success. There is very little live material of Steve in Asia, but this is well worth seeing. Sole Survivor in this recording is smokin, and the guitar lead is unbelievable at the end. A great show.

STEVE HOWE & GREG LAKE: Amazing Concert With ASIA!...4
This is really an amazing Asia concert with original guitarrist Steve Howe (YES, GTR) and Greg Lake (E.L.P.) at the mike stand (?)... It seemed that John wetton had left the band for good, but the thing was that Lake sang all the concert and the band didn't miss the original voice. At the time, I'd heard that Steve Howe had a fight with Wetton (?), but I didn't know if this was a temporary stage for the band between those problems... The band play all recognizable material from the two first albums, a beautifull Steve Howe's 6 string acoustic solo that ended at the first GTR record: "Sketches in the Sun"; and a Carl Palmer played an extended drum solo. Unfortunately To this day, there is only various reisuesed DVD's concerts with John Wetton (Bass & Vocals) and Pat Thrall (Guitar) containing early material from first album with the cover of first ASIA album (bad move for the real fan)... Why this excellent historic concert with Howe and Lake hasn't been re-edited again in full?...Good Luck!...
