Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Throughout her 25-year career, Céline Dion has always been filled with great pride and love regarding her French-Canadian heritage, yet in all her years of performing--since her debut as a songwriter at the age of 12--she has never put out an official French Greatest Hits disc in her first language... until now. The double-disc collection is filled with songs spanning her incredibly successful career; with liner notes (written solely in French) that talk about how Céline spent many years learning her craft from respected singer-songwriters who took a young chanteuse under their wings, from Luc Plamondon to Jean-Jacques Goldman. Aside from the previously released tracks, which include her bubbly hit "Je Danse Dans Ma Tête," the emotive "Ziggy," and the beautiful "Sous Le Vent," a duet with French sensation Garou there are three new tunes to entice fans. Only one is in English, the opera-meets-Titanic sounding "I Believe in You," a duet with Il Divo; the remaining two are the understated "Je Ne Vous Oublie Pas" and "Tous Les Secrets," a song about unconditional love. The one element that is frustratingly absent is the lack of information about the individual tracks in the liner notes: Nowhere is there a year of release for each of the 36 songs, nor a story about each song's history. That said, this disc will prove to be a definitive collection to her devoted French fans. --Denise Sheppard

A solid starting point to Celine's French-language career4
Long before Celine Dion became a household name in the U.S., she was already a tremendously successful recording artist in Quebec and France. Her first album, La Voix du Bon Dieu, was released in 1981 at the tender age of 12, and Celine released no fewer than *fourteen* French-language albums between 1981-1990, when her English-language debut Unison was released.

Very little of this early catalog remains in print on CD; there are a handful of early French tracks that are frequently recycled, but some of her better early songs have never been remastered / released to CD. On On ne change pas, Sony has collected Celine's French-language hits spanning her career (1981-2005), including her very first song, Ce N'etait Qu'un Reve, Une Colombe, which Celine performed for the Pope's visit to Montreal in 1984, Eurovision winner Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi, and recent hits like Pour Que Tu M'aimes Encore, the powerful duet Sous Le Vent, and L'Amour Existe Encore.

Personally, I feel that Celine's best French work was from 1981 to 1988. Oddly, Celine's earliest tracks are on Disc 2 instead of Disc 1. On Ne Change Pas features remastered rarities such as Une Colombe, the delightful Ma Chambre, and Melanie. Celine's earliest LPs are also present, with tracks from La Voix du Bon Dieux, Les Chemins de Ma Maison, and Melanie. Incognito, Celine's first album with Sony and Luc Plamondon instead of Eddy Marnay, takes up a third of the second disc, with songs from the same era like Fais Ce Que Tu Voudras and Ma Chambre rounding out the 1980s.

This 2-CD set offers very little for the diehard Celine collector: if you already own all of her recent French albums (D'Eux, 1 Fille & 4 Types, S'Il Suffisait D'Aimer) and early Celine collections, there are few incentives, except for a fairly complete overview of her French career. There are several new tracks: Tous les Secrets, I Believe In You and Je Ne Vous Oublie Pas, but I felt that these paled in comparison with her early gems. This is a good start, but Sony left off plenty of beautiful songs from Celine's earliest albums that have never been released to CD.

Greatest Hits in French5
Celine Dion; in French or English - doesn't matter; her voice is just as powerful! This is possibly the most gifted female vocalist of all time....the fact that almost all of the songs on these two discs are sang in French should not distract the most devoted of Celine English-speaking/understanding fans. This is a magnificant lady; let's hope that her will to sing and perform will never fade away! In this time of global uncertainty and commotion, a refreshing voice like Celine's is more than welcome... this double CD greatest hits would undoubtedly melt the coldest of hearts! Viva Celine - may your voice never tire!!!...

On Ne Change Pas (We Don't Change)-Perfect title for this great collection!5
And indeed, she doesn't change. CD 1 is French hits from the '90's and early 2000's. CD 2 is some songs from the 90's as well as many of the French songs she recorded throughout the 80's. Listen to the 1st disc and then the 2nd disc, and you'll see that her voice was just as powerful in her later years as it was in her early career. This album will definitely show you a true artist whose talent didn't diminish with age (unlike a lot of other singers out there!). Buy this-even if (like me) you're an American who doesn't understand French a bit. It is a real treat for all Celine Dion fans. (And now that I've listened to this album, I am definitely looking forward to the release of her new French album "D'elles" next week!)
