Meet Monk
The Jazz Biography series provides a cheap way to get to know an artist, both musically and otherwise. However, the quality of recordings and selections varies greatly from artist to artist. The Monk edition is the best that I have found. It gives an excellent survey of the best known songs of Monk, and includes some fun liner notes on his life and career. The recording quality is not always the best, and the recordings are probably not the "definitive" versions, but for the price it is hard to complain. If you feel like you should know more about Monk but do not feel ready to risk the price of a regularly priced CD in pursuit of this knowledge, this particular selection is not a bad way to go.
