INCREDIBLE value! Detailed and accurate, well-balanced sound!
Since i've been building up a substantial MP3 music collection, i've been wanting to upgrade my older 'Labtec' PC speakers with a better set that has a subwoofer and more detailed, revealing sound. I am very demanding of excellent sound dynamics as an audiophile and musician (my expensive, high-end system consists of McIntosh amplification, an HDCD/SACD source, Magnepan planar speakers, a Velodyne sub, and expensive 'esoteric' interconnects and speaker cabling), and wanted to find, if possible, an inexpensive 'best bang per buck' set of PC speakers. After much research and listening, I decided on the 'Altec-Lansing' VS2321, since they sound very musical and detailed. The subwoofer was a selling point as well, since it has a FRONT adjustable volume control, and a small 'footprint' compared to other subs. The bass also sounds 'tight' and fast with no hint of 'muddiness'. The 'SFX' sound field expanding technology also sounds great, and is certainly not a gimmick. Folks, save yourself all the legwork and hassle of researching PC speakers. I've done it for you! The VS2321 is a veritable BARGAIN, and sounds very musical and accurate for a small, powered speaker system with subwoofer. A great deal!
UPDATE 12/31/06, a few weeks after my initial review: I noticed a few reviewers here claim to recieve hiss and/or interference on their speakers. I have recieved NONE whatsoever, even with placing my cellphone right up to them, AND transmitting with 1,200 watts of RF power close by with my Ham Radio linear amp (i'm an Amateur Radio Operator too) on various frequencies! To me, this attests to their quality in rejecting strong or closeby RF signals. One more thing- no I do not work for Altec-Lansing, given my glowing review here. I'm just a passionate audiophile who enjoys sharing information with others about good speakers, systems, etc.
As Advertised
I bought these speakers because they are very inexpensive, and I was unable to find reviews that weren't less than great, a little hard to believe. They do sound great and I like that the subwoofer isn't enormous, taking up all the space under my desk. I think the volume control on the subwoofer is a must. I use these speakers in my office at work, so I can't turn the volume up without disturbing others. The most telling thing is that the sound is full and balanced at low volumes. So many of these small systems only sound good with the sound turned up. Ever notice, at the store when you ask the salesperson to demo a system, the sound is going to get cranked up to warp volume. To me, the one drawback is that these are not the sexiest looking speakers, but if Altec Lansing screws up the sound for a sexier look they have blown it.
Misery loves company...
Well...it's nice to know I'm not the only one.
I've owned these speakers for about a month. Immediately after hooking up the speakers, I too noticed a faint, but very audible "clicking" noise from the speakers. It was faint enough that it wasn't too annoying or distracting. That was until I bought a new computer desk and moved my wireless router next to the speakers. Now, the clicking noise isn't so faint anymore...in fact, you can hear it from across the room.
Let's just say, "Buyer Beware!" As others have pointed out, I would be wary of purchasing these speakers if they will be anywhere in the vicinity of wireless electronics (routers, phones, etc).
Other than that (glaring) problem, these speakers are outstanding! The sound quality is crisp and the bass isn't overwhelming once adjusted. The volume is very respectable with little distortion for speakers in this price range. The bass control is mounted on the sub, which is a little cumbersome.
The spatial (sfx) feature is interesting, although the audible field is somewhat narrow and sounds best when you are positioned between the speakers.
The speaker design is simple but attractive. The only complaint here is the smaller speakers are somewhat top-heavy and are easily knocked over.
Overall, I really like the speakers but the clicking is going to drive me insane.
