A major symphony rediscovered
Roussel's Second Symphony is a wonderful work--brooding, deeply moving, and very original. While not a programatic piece at all, I feel that the composer must have been thinking about the Great War when he wrote this amazing piece. The sound world may have a little of Debussy or Stravinsky, but the piece sounds like nothing else I have heard. I hope Eschenbach records the other Rousell symphonies too--apparantly this work was a major discovery for him, as it has been for me. The two better known Bacchus and Ariadne ballet suites are also beautifully performed. Definitely on my record of the year list....
