British Pre-History and History2
This work is more expansive than the title implies. It dates back to when Britain was connected to Europe and it speaks of people who lived there long before the Celts arrived. Also, it implies that Celts originally lived in much of Western Europe. However, in one way it's limited: when I hear "Celt," I think "Irish," and yet this work says close to nothing about Ireland.
The work gets more interesting as time move closer to our own. As much as I love hearing about people who lived and created architecture thousands of years ago, the first ten minutes of looking at Stonehenge and other boulders was a bit boring. This work used a mix of photographs, reenactments, and film clips as illustration. It only had a handful of interviewees and all of them were British, middle-aged, white men.
Though this is a British production meant for a British audience, it does not shout, "Ra! Ra! Ra! Weren't our ancestors so awesome!?" This installation was just not as interesting as the one in the series on the pre-Columbian Americans. A documentary about Celtic gender and sexual dynamics has been released that is much more interesting than this work.
