Product Description

Created by the same production team responsible for the hugely popular series Cheers, Wings has a similarly homey, familiar feel. Replacing the Boston bar is a small airport on Nantucket Island. The denizens of the bar are replaced with pilots and airport personnel. What the viewers are left with is a delightful show revolving around Sandpiper Air Service, a tiny charter airline co-owned by two handsome, charming brothers, a rival airline, Aeromass, and a lunch counter run the brothers' life-long friend, Helen.

A well-written sitcom that infuses romance with slapstick humor, Wings takes off in its third season with the inclusion of series regular Tony Shalhoub (Monk), who plays immigrant cab driver Antonio Scarpacci. Some of the funniest storylines in this 22-episode collection revolve around Antonio and his quest to stay in the United States. Wings is set at an airport in Nantucket, where brothers Joe (Timothy Daly, Diner, The Nine) and Brian Hackett (Steven Weber, Jeffrey, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip) run a small airline that's struggling to stay in business. The previous season ended with Joe's on-again, off-again crush Helen (Crystal Bernard) moving to New York to pursue her dream of working as a classical musician. This third year resolves that plot and finds Helen returning home to Nantucket and eventually marrying one of her friends at the airport. As the dim-witted mechanic Lowell, Thomas Haden Church provides consistent laughs, but exhibits none of the nuanced acting skills that make him such a standout in later films such as Sideways. And while Weber gets the funnier lines, it is Daly as the more serious older brother Joe who is the heart of the show. Look for guest appearances by Kelsey Grammer and Bebe Neuwirth reprising their Cheers roles of Frasier and Lilith. Bernard shares some wonderful scenes with them and gets to show off her knack for physical comedy. Also, be on the lookout for Laura Innes, playing Lowell's flirtatious wife Bunny. Her loopy portrayal here is quite a departure from the stark, straight-laced part she plays on ER. Ultimately, it's the cast's strong chemistry that truly makes this season of Wings soar. --Jae-Ha Kim

One of the funniest seasons ever!5
Joe: Does the world have to revolve around your love life?
Brian: Wouldn't it be a magical place?

The addition of Alex, a perfect foil for Brian's noncommital character, infused terrific new storylines in this 3rd season...the episode that introduces her is just the perfect portrayal of how silly guys get when a pretty girl is in the picture. I am nuts about Joe, but boy does Brian steal this show, in the scenes at the gym where they're trying to outdo each other in trying to impress Alex.

Alex: (sarcastically, aware of what they're doing) You're in that machine wrong.
Brian: (a little haughtily): This is how they use it in Europe.

It somewhat scares me how easily watching ANY episode of "Wings" gets me to that "happy place," and helps me forget my troubles/stresses...but it's a lot cheaper than antidepressants!

Best sitcom, but disks aren't3
Wings has been a favorite sitcom of mine since it first aired. I kept hoping for a long time to see it make it to DVD. I have the first three seasons and enjoy watching them. However, the picture is not very sharp or clear. I've got DVDs of movies made in the 70s that are better than this. And most disappointing of all, Disk 4 of the third season won't even play. My DVD player doesn't even recognize a disk being in the tray. I've cleaned the disk and checked the player. Player works fine with all other disks. Unfortunately I discovered that after the return period was expired. I doubt that I will buy anymore even though I loved the show. Hey people, make sure when buying a boxed set to check out every disk so a return can be made if necessary.

Best comedy of th 90's5
This was easily the best comedy on TV in the 90's and season 3 is one of the best - the season 3 does not include the "Alex" character despite one reviewers claim - she enters on season 4 which hopefully will be due out in Feb 2007. The episode that hooked me was Helen crashed the Jeep thru the office. Lowell and Antonio are a riot in most all these episodes, as well as everyone - 5 stars easy.
