The tribute to Abba Eban segment In those days there were giants in the earth 5
I was deeply moved by the interviews with Abba Eban, and the film clip which was shown. The clip was of the U.N. vote for the partition of Palestinian, and thus for the creation of a Jewish state. Rose appreciates Eban, and for that he is to be appreciated.
Eban was in his manner of speech and character of intellect far above the politicians, diplomats that we ordinarily see. He speaks inspirationally about his first coming to then Palestine as a Major in the British Army, about his long years of service in Israeli government, about the moment he at the U.N. first raised the flag of Israel putting it among the community of nations, and transforming historically the status of the Jewish people.
He also talks about the concept of founding fathers and how he would like Israeli citizens to have this concept in the way the Americans have their concept of the founding fathers. Eban certainly was one of Israel's founding fathers.
Seeing him on the show, the last interview was when he was already frail I could not help being moved at the thought of how a great generation has passed from the earth ( This past year Teddy Kollek died) and how missed Eban's dignity and greatness are today.
In those days there were giants in the earth. And we little people today struggling to survive can only look back for them in longing, and in hope somehow that at another time, and in another generation something of their like will come again.
