On October 19 1901 the people of Paris turned out by the thousands to watch a dashing impeccably dressed Brazilian-born inventor Alberto Santos-Dumont conquer the skies. His fragile gas-powered balloon made an astounding half-hour flight over the city and around the Eiffel Tower and later he piloted Europe s first ever airplane flight. For a brief moment of glory Santos-Dumont was the toast of Paris and acclaimed around the world. Then eclipsed by the growing fame of the Wright Brothers Santos-Dumont began slipping into illness and depression. During World War I the airplane which he believed to be his own invention became a lethal weapon eventually driving him to despair and suicide. Featuring captivating recreations and replicas of Santos pioneering balloons and airplanes NOVA reveals the daring flights and dramatic life of a neglected genius. Excellent and Outstanding!
This documentary on Alberto Santos-Dumont the Brazilian aviation pioneer is an excellent work on Santos-Dumont's life as a pioneer of aviation. Santos-Dumont the biggest Brazilian hero after Tiradents (Joaquim José da Silva Xavier) really deserves that documentary on his work as an inventor. 2006 is the year of Santos-Dumont 100th birthday and that documentary came out just in the right time. I love the photography and the historical facts on Santos-Dumont madness to fly. Excellent reproduction of the 14 BIS flight by a Brazilian admirer of Santos. So bad they use a voice with a French accent not with a Brazilian accent. Santos-Dumont mother language was PORTUGUESE not FRENCH. If you don't mind hearing a Brazilian speaking with a FRENCH ACCENT not with a PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE ACCENT you will love this documentary. Excellent!!!!
