Customer Reviews

Spectacularly beautiful choral music5
This CD was previously available on the Bayer label, performed by the Nordic Chamber Choir which has changed its name to the Chamber Choir of Europe. As of this date, the old version still appears on Amazon, available as a used CD. I heard Lauridsen's "O Magnum Mysterium" for the first time on the radio recently, searched for a good version, and was persuaded by the excellent reviews for the out-of-print version. The reviews are spot on! I am not generally a fan of modern classical music, but after listening to this CD twice, I am entranced by Lauridsen's compositions and the Chamber Choir's artistry. Lauridsen is modern enough to sound fresh, but traditional enough to take an unashamed place in the great tradition of choral music. The music is majestic and uplifting, rich and complex without being sentimental. The CD is well-recorded and has a rich, full sound (DDD). This is one of the most exciting classical CDs I've discovered in the last 5 years. Highly recommended.

Simply magnificent5
Jim Svejda, the notoriously cranky classical music reviewer, rhapsodized about Lauridsen's "Lux Aeterna" in his 1999 book (The Insider's Guide to Classical Recordings). Naturally I had to check it out, and was enthralled to discover the beauty of Lauridsen's choral writing. Later, I had the great good luck to sing his "Dirait-on" and "O Magnum Mysterium" in my own chorus. When you sing Lauridsen, you can fully appreciate the clarity and adventure of his harmonies as well as the gorgeous melodies.

Now we have the definitive recording of many of Lauridsen's great works: "Chanson des Roses", "Lux Aeterna" and "Magnum" (alas, no "Winter Cycle" though). For anyone who's heard and loved the L.A. Master Chorale CD of these works (the only CD available for awhile), you are in for a treat. The sound quality on the Hanssler CD is unbelievable (play it on your best speakers), and the performance by the Chamber Choir of Europe is stunning --much easier to understand the lyrics here than on the previous CD, and the vocal harmonic interplay stands out clear and strong.

If you love choral music in any form, this CD is a must-buy.

Monumental...5
This version of "O Magnum Mysterium" has to be the most moving, beautiful one that I have come across (there are many)...
A beautiful work in its entirety. Highly recommended.
