Product Description

Award winning documentary. After finding a most unusual web site that was seeking funds to help reverse a sex change, award winning filmmaker Tom Murray set out on a cross country journey to explore just a small part of the vastly diverse transgender community. What happens with a young Gay man, struggling not only with his sexuality but also gender, decides to have surgery to become a female, and later decides to return to being a Gay man again? Can someone live their life full time as a female, but still have a penis? These are just some of the stories told in the fascinating, poignant, informative and some may say controversial documentary ALMOST MYSELF. The film focuses primarily on women who are white and older, yet were identified as male at birth. The stories include journeys of boyhood to womanhood and the struggles of mending and transcending gender.

Editorial Reviews

Review
VARIETY - "The latest chapter in Tom Murray's easygoing exploration of lesbian, gay, transgendered and bisexual issues, "Almost Myself," finds the filmmaker traveling across the country talking to various transgendered men-to-women. Neither militant nor "objective," and without a shred of pretension, Murray admits he is interviewing a limited range of people "... almost like myself" -- white, over 40, and labeled male at birth. He elicits remarkable candor in his subjects, illuminating a wide spectrum of choices and lifestyles. Success of "Transamerica" could heighten cable interest, though pic may prove insufficiently sensationalistic for some auds." --Variety

Good film great music!5
The film gives a good overview of the trans world. Just like in life there are down to earth folks but also, folks with lots of issues that have nothing to do with their sexual taste, and out right stereotypes. We can learn a lot from all of the individuals in the film. We can certainly walk away knowing that 'it' is as much a mystery to the transperson as it is to str8 people; or gays for that matter.

I thought the use of a transsexual's music in the film is a tribute to Tom Murry's ability to reach out to all communities.

An Honest Portrayal 5
I have viewed this "Almost Myself"three times since I received the dvd....

Is the best...Honest...Informative and Real....The ladies interviewed were just what a group of students studying the subject needs to see....and for other transsexuals or transgendered these ladies give one hope and strength...

I just cannot write enough good about this dvd...Finally an honest portrayal...

I found several more pieces of myself here.5
Very interesting. A unique DVD, I'd never seen anything like it. There are some great books showing up, but I haven't been able to find many movies. It was nice to see proof that people like me exist as well as a good representation of the variety of people that are Transgender.
