Taliban Overview4
This History Channel DVD is a good historical overview of why/where they started, and where they have been. Some of the video is unusual.

Mostly Old News!3
Both the Russians and Americans misunderstood each others' intentions in Afghanistan - the Russians thought the Americans were moving in, and the Americans thought the Russians were marching to the sea. A Communist coup took over the Afghan government, and the Russian Army soon followed to back it up in 1979.

America made it a priority to help defeat the Russians (as they had us in Vietnam) - billions of dollars and weapons were poured in. American Stinger missiles turned the tide - they shot down three Russian choppers the first day deployed.

The department Soviets left much of the war material, and after leaving the fighting continued - now in the form of a Civil War. The Taliban started with religious students from Pakistan, received important support from Pakistan, and took Kabul in 1996.

The last information anyone has about Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan was 12/7/01 in the Tora Bora area.
