Def Comedy Jam ---- All That and More
First I will admit that Mike Epps is a comical genius when doing the Hosting thing. Def Comedy Jam did put together an interesting set of performers because it made you want to watch an entire episode and not just skip over certain performers.
Overall, I give this Set the "One to Watch" and mainly because they have an entire set of performers that are on Top of Their Game. Big Ups to Mr. Epps & Mr. Simmons.
A Man Aint Suppose to Cry, but...
Usually I don't write about things I don't like, but this matters to me so here it goes.
I have to own the fact that I am from a different generation at 62 years old now. There are good storytellers here and there throughout the 2 disk. There were times that I surely did laugh good and hard, but when all was said and done these DVD's ultimately depressed me no end. I would give the set away, but I don't think it would be good to even give them away to somebody I DIDN'T like! It might make them worse.
In too many cases it seemed to me that their "humor" reflected a celebration of the condition of their oppression, loss of history, pride in family, culture or possibility of livable future free from the hell we live in now.
My high school students often try to tell me that there is a difference between "nigger" and "nigga". Too often I don't see the difference. However in the different set of Def POETRY Jam when Felipe Luciano sings "Jibaro, my pretty niggah" I feel the pain, passion, commitment and ultimate victory in it. The past, present and future is in the present moment of his performance. In other words it unfolds upon multiple levels of meaning and reality. Good storytelling, an embodied performance!
We have a tradition of using laughter to move through the hard times, the tragedy times, but on Def COMEDY Jam I am not sure this is it. It isn't for me anyway. We have a history where we laughed in the face of it all, despite it all fashioning a vision of what could be, needs to be if we are going to be. I am suggesting that there is too much the stench of death in many of these performances while the performers smile and laugh beore you.
I actually bought Def COMEDY Jam by mistake. I actually wanted Def POETRY Jam. I kept it anyway thinking, "What the hell! Give it a try. I LOVE to laugh!" Different than Def COMEDY Jam, Def POETRY Jam has hard core laughter AND hot burning tears ON PURPOSE. Def Poetry is multicultural, but it more clearly reflects the heart and vision of a Martin, a Malcolm, an Angela Davis or a Fannie Lou Hamer... people of courage and vision.
Laughter is a healing activity, a healing gift to give to friends, relations and strangers, but given that we do have freedom of speech even here, a lot more thought needs to be given into how we use that freedom, that essential right.
I am speaking from a lived history, subtleties of meaning, determination to come out of the shadows and Coltrane visions of dazzling Suns and Constellations.
There is much I admire about the current generation. They have an awesome resilience. I am waiting for their gifts to bear MORE of the fruits all of us desperately need now and tomorrow.
Gold Mine
This is the best comedy collection ive bought on amazon.the biggest bang you can get for your buck.
