Editorial Reviews
Album Description
This set is a sincere homage to an unfairly forgotten jazzwoman whose style brought a refreshing and individual voice in the tumultuous New York jazz scene of the 50s. Barbara Carroll is known among female piano players, as the first to venture into the progressive Bop style that was especially associated with Bud Powell. These 4 CDs hold Barbara Carroll's complete trio recordings under her leadership between 1951 and 1956. A successful recording period which spans sixteen studio sessions and 77 tunes originally released on 6 LPs, 2 EPs and 2 anthologies, cut for two of the best labels in the genre: Atlantic and RCA Victor. The set includes comprehensive biographic notes on 16-page book let, full of historic pictures, original vinyl art work and session details. Jazz Connections. 2007.
Customer Reviews
As sophisticated as it comes
Barbara Carroll spent years performing at an upper East side club called The Embers for people like the ones you see now on MAD MEN. You know, white people in suits who had their hair done properly, wore nice clean clothes and drank like fish. This in contrast to the dope smoking bebop/beatnik crowd from the village. Don't think for a minute that that means these recordings don't swing because they sure do. 77 songs. Only 6 have vocals. One is recorded at a wonky speed but other than that, this is a flawless set of wonderful versions of the American songbook, played easy by one of the great mistresses of JAZZ. You won't regret purchasing this. It is simply the best of it's class and it has a LOT of Class. And at this price it's about 35 cents per song for a big box of priceless music.
Classy lady
I really enjoy listening to Barbara Carroll play piano and sing. She's a class act all the way. A great jazz/cabaret musician. This set is comprised of two CD's which contain music she recorded from 1951-1956 and some wonderful classics are here: My Funny Valentine, Autumn in New York, Mountain Greenery, But Not For Me, etc. The Barbara Carroll Trio features Joe Shulman on bass and Herb Wasserman on drums for the most part, although there were other men on bass and drums at times. Carroll's singing is more an accompaniment of her playing rather than the other way around. She doesn't have a great voice but it's fine, her piano playing is the tops. If you want an excellent introduction to one of our great jazz pianists, this set would be a good place to start.
