Head nodding grooves.4
Over the past 10 years or so, keyboardist Oliver Silk has been laying the groundwork for what promises to be an auspicious release.
Silk first came to our attention here on this side of the Atlantic as one-half of "Sugar & Silk", a creative duo in which he shared star billing with bassist and long time friend Danny Sugar.
They issued a pair of releases in the UK. Silk's name next surfaced in 2004, this time on the debut from sax man James Vargas : Silk was the album's producer, shared in the writing credits, and appeared on all the tracks.
This now sets the stage for Oli's own solo debut on which serves up a lush and simmering brew that is nothing less than quintessential smooth jazz !!
Highly melodic solos highlight delicate melodies over head nodding grooves. Try the vocal "So Many Ways" or the upbeat "Deuces Wild" featuring saxman Jaared.
Standouts are the full-on 80's style Fusion of "San Carlos Approach" and "Rushmoor Café" plus the wickedly soulful version of "Summer Fling".
It's pretty good in its own way, and in what almost seems revolutionary in the modern smooth jazz climate, it doesn't have a cover tune!

Always a Pleasure5
Since finding a little web radio station (now gone) a few years back, I've always been grateful of their introduction to the world of Great Music across the waters. As a long time fan from the "Sugar and Silk" days, I must say, again, I was not disappointed. Oli Silk's first solo CD "So Many Ways" has again blended the right mix of music and occasional lyrics to form a wonderful, wonderful CD. Because of the past collaborations with Sugar, sight unseen and unheard, I purchased this CD and as always "SATISFIED". The music from our brothers across the way has been long overdue, and I hope to continue to hear from Oli again in the future. I'll be looking for you when you make your way across the US to the East Coast. "I'm There, Brother!!"

Outstanding Debut-Smooth as Silk5
`So Many Ways' marks an outstanding debut for this young and talented artist from the United Kingdom. Since 1996 the U.K. has been aware of his ability as a keyboardist and producer, now its time for the rest of the Jazz world to hear him. At the turn of the century Oli Silk joined bassist Danny Sugar to form the fusion duo `Sugar & Silk' releasing two albums (`Fact of Friction?' in 2000 and `Duality' in 2002) now on his own, `So Many Ways' released on Trippin `N' Rhythm records embarks a new international beginning for Oli.
This project from start to finish proves to be `smooth as silk' full of soulful rhythms, funky grooves and silky smooth jazz flavors. The smooth jazz hit `Easy Does It' exemplifies how smooth Oli can get. In `So Many Ways' the man lives up to his name! Watch out for Oli Silk as his outstanding debut, implies that he may be the next in line of great smooth jazz keyboardists! ~the JazzeOne
