An impressive sampler of many grindhouse genres
I didn't rate this 5 stars because the packaging & disc printing weren't very helpful. But it earns the other 4 stars for a diverse lineup of late 60's through early 80's grindhouse fare.
The discs themselves are great-- nothing fancy, the films will play back-to-back if you start with the first one, a double feature on each side of every disc. The menu comes right up without any cheesy manufacturer logo/intro, and is straightforward with 6 chapter stops per film. I've watched the kung fu, spaghetti western, & crime movies so far, and am looking forward to the other genres in the set.. Most are predictably video transfers in full screen, but there are also some film transfers in widescreen. The picture & sound quality add to the experience, if anything.
For those who wish they had numbered the films in a list for the disc cases, here's what's on the discs:
Disc 1: Women in Prison / Cannibal
1. Women's Camp 119 (1977)
2. Tortured Angels (1982)
3. Raw Force (1982)
4. Savage Man/Savage Beast (1974)
Disc 2: Cops / Disaster
5. Confessions of a Police Captain (1971)
6. Executioner 2 (1984)
7. Poseidon Explosion (1973)
8. Earthquake 7.9 (?)
Disc 3: Mafia / Kung Fu
9. Violent Professionals (1973)
10. Frank and Tony (?)
11. Kung Fu Punch of Death (1973)
12. Return of the Tiger (1979)
Disc 4: Spaghetti Western / Blacksploitation
13. Go Kill and Come Back (1967)
14. Bounty Man (1972)
15. Three Tough Guys (1974)
16. Mandinga (1976)
Disc 5: Horror / Sexploitation
17. The Children (1980)
18. Demon With Child (1975)
19. High School Hitch Hikers (?)
20. Carry On Emannuelle (1978)
A real mixed bag where you get what you pay for
Before you buy this set ask yourself a couple of questions.
Do you want picture perfect transfers? If so look else where. The films in this set are for the most far from the best transfers out there. Many seem to be taken from VHS copies of the films, some with the the flaws of the tape clearly visible on the screen. Some like Raw Force are sourced from what looks to be a blurry print. All seem to be full screen transfers. That said, most of the handful I've looked at are acceptable considering the material involved, only with one or two exceptions all are watchable (especially since its unlikely that these films would have ever been used to show case your HD home theater). The films are on five double sided DVDs in three plastic cases in a cardboard box. The problem with the discs is that the labels on the discs don't list the titles, rather they list "Side A features 1 and 2 Side B features 3 and 4" so you have to look at the case and then count down the list to figure out which movie is on which disc. The presentation is far from the best possible.
On the other hand if you want a good collection of different types of grindhouse movies you can't do much better than this. The price you're going to pay per film kind of out weighs the poor quality of the transfers. The selection of films is actually quite good and worth it because there don't seem to be any really bad films in the bunch (at least as far as these sort of movies go).
I've rated the set 2 out of 5 because the packaging, while it will protect the discs, isn't really helpful in finding your movie. Also the mostly fair picture quality of the films is going to turn many people off. If you get this set knowing what you're getting into then its going to be money well spent, if not you will be disappointed. Then again having looked over a friends set I'm having mixed feelings about picking it up for myself.
20 Nacho Cheese Eatin', Sticky Floor, Corndog Smell Theatre movies...I LOVE IT!!!
If you're not sure what the grindhouse experience is about then don't buy this box set. The movies are clearly from an era that influenced big budget Hollywood film lore. Don't expect to recognize any of the titles either because that's the true grindhouse experience. Most of which are obscure with limited distribution. I watched The Children (1980), a cheesy horror film about children exposed to a toxic gas while riding home from school, the gas of course transforms the children into mad killers with the power to melt your face off....SWEET! The other was from the blaxploitation genre, Three Tough Guys (1974) which was scored in it's entirety by the great Isaac Hayes, the kiddies will know him as "Chef" from South Park or the guy who sang "Shaft"
Overall, I gave it 5 stars because I don't care about packaging. I have an extensive library and boxes take up space. Each disc contains 4 movies (2 on each side) it's a steal. These movies aren't bad movies, they're just cheaply made movies. A bad movie promotes itself as good to get your money. A grindhouse movie is usually an entertaining movie that is not aesthetically appealing. The proper attitude for grindhouse movie viewing is with a touch of optimism, a hint of contempt and a respect for true film making. Tarantino and Rodriguez's movie is an homage to this great innovative era in film making.
