Hurdy Gur Freakers Unite!
What can I say about this show without gushing? Ahead of it's time? Too ordinary. A work of art, no, a genuine masterpiece. In the fall of 2000, for 13 short episodes, we were treated to one of the most original TV series concepts presented in concert with a promotional "real world" website to get a very immersive storytelling experience. There were thrills and scares sometimes served up from a first person perspective thanks to the popularity of Haxan film's Blair Witch Project and the use of digital handheld cameras in the shows production. Taking a page from the cult '70s classic Kolchak the Night Stalker, this show presented us with the strange and bizarre served up with an incredibly likeable cast and innovative production design. The monsters in the show range from the silly to the downright Fearsum, but one of the greatest joys is to watch the main actors do their thing. The on-screen chemistry among the main cast is the best I've ever seen. You can tell that this was a fun show, a labor of love for all involved. This show deserved a full run and it is a sin and a crime that it hasn't enjoyed a lavish DVD release. The outtakes and extra footage probably rival the actual show, not to mention the website content. So yeah, count me as one of the first in line when a DVD box set comes out. Hurdy gur, Freakers!
it's about time
I can't believe that this show is finally getting a dvd set. I remember turning down plans for 13 of the most formative Friday nights of my life in high school so I could catch up on the exploits of Derek, Jason, Chloe and the rest. This show was so monumental in influencing my tastes, not only in movies and television, but in music and websites as well. The fact that the show was "interactive" was innovative to say the least and was not the least of its appeal. The stories were gripping, the acting was amazing, the music was superb... it's about time FOX got off their butts and got Freaking!
Freaklinks!
Okay so I wasn't lucky enough to be part of the people who saw this show during it's original airing back in 2001. I HAVE however caught the re-runs on Chiller from DirecTv. This is a wonderful show! It's very interesting and I think one of the best parts of it was the realness the show gives off. Being a viewer you do still know that it is just a TV show, but it doesn't have that completely fake essence floating around it. The show just draws you in by taking spins off of some real legends. Mixing fact and fiction is great! I really hope this comes out on DVD soon!
