September 2008-Work Sharp Abrasive kit(sanding)
Used with my worksharp machine to help get a sharper edge on chiels and planes. This works extremely well and am satified at how easy it is to sharpen chisels and planes blades 2" wide. Rich
Expensive and not long lasting.
I purchased these extra abrasives to accompany the WS2000 I recently purchased. (See my review on that one as well) I had read all the reviews and noticed that most people thought that if you had a number of items that needed new bevels, it would be best to have plenty of extra on hand.
Essentially this product is a nine piece set of 5" round, peel and stick abrasive. It includes one grinder grade piece of 80 grit, four 150 grit slotted and four 220 grit slotted abrasives. While $15 bucks isn't over the top, it is about what I would expect to pay for three full 5 packs of these same abrasives at my local mega-hardware.
Aside from being pricey, the slotted paper not only wears out quickly but is relatively fragile to boot. When given the nature of the job it is meant to perform its safe to assume you will get a quality equal to the task. Once again it appears that logical thinking is not a part of manufacturing strategy. These units are noticeably diminished with the first use and one shouldn't expect to sharpen more than two or three chisels at most before the slotted abrasive pads stop cutting completely.
All in all you will be better off purchasing standard 5" round peel-n-stick abrasives and slotting them yourself with a sharp razor knife. It's easy to do, considerably less expensive and appears to work much better in terms of longevity.
Bottom line: The WS2000 will do a good job of speeding up your sharpening tasks but you'll do better to avoid this accessory pack and go native.
Abrasive kit is a must have!
If you have alot of items to sharpen I recommend having extra abrasives.
