One of the most important films I've ever seen.5
I just saw this documentary on the Sundance Channel. Each Tuesday evening, they air special programming called "The Green." The first segment consists of reports on sustainable businesses, conservation/efficiency/recycling efforts, green fashion & architecture, organic farming and so forth. Sundance follows that segment with a film related to the environment. The first one I saw was the excellent Radiant City, which was an informative critique of suburbia that was surprisingly heart-warming and funny. Kind of a mix between The End of Suburbia: Oil Depletion and the Collapse of the American D Ream and This Is Spinal Tap (Special Edition). It quickly became one of my all-time favorite movies.
So, I began to watch the Sundance Channel every Tuesday evening to see if I'd be similarly impressed with "The Green" - and they did it again. The next installment I saw featured this film, "The Refugees of the Blue Planet."
I can't begin to do it justice. Suffice it to say that it brilliantly exposes some horrendous instances of environmental injustice. From massive eucalyptus plantations in Brazil displacing indigenous people, to "sour-gas" drilling in Canada destroying the lives of family ranchers in Alberta - this film will enlighten, enrage and hopefully inspire people to make whatever effort they can to advance what Paul Hawken has called "the largest movement in the world" Blessed Unrest: How the Largest Movement in the World Came into Being and Why No One Saw It Coming. Whether it's contacting representatives, investing in socially responsible stocks The Sri Advantage: Why Socially Responsible Investing Has Outperformed Financially, becoming a member of one (or more) of the wonderful enviro groups, subscribing to environmental magazines like Plenty Magazine, writing letters to editors, calling radio shows and countless other efforts - every little action not only helps protect ecosystems, but also liberates people from the endless efforts of the corporate elite to control our behavior and manage our perceptions Pr!: A Social History of Spin as they impose policies that would be rejected by the general public. The Corporation

I'm thrilled that this DVD is available on Amazon. One of my political actions will be to buy multiple copies of this film and to share them with co-workers, friends, church people (an increasing number of churches are joining the "the creation care" movement A Greener Faith: Religious Environmentalism and Our Planet's Future), people in media, teachers, libraries (that have had their budgets slashed over the past several years), etc. It's simply one of the most important movies I've ever seen.
