Product Description

GRINDHOUSE...the American term for a theater that mainly showed exploitation films. Grindhouses were known for non-stop, triple-bill programs of B movies, usually consisting of a double feature where two films were shown back to back. Beginning in the late 1960s and especially during the 1970s, the subject matter of exploitation films shown in these theaters often included explicit sex, violence, bizarre or perverse plot points, and other taboo content - biker films, horror films, martial arts films etc.

To salute this film revolution of a bygone era, BCI presents a line of DVD double features that recreate the ephemeral experience of the Grindhouse theaters with a whole new, interactive DVD experience. Featuring back-to-back film presentations, complete with movie trailers, commercials and an intermission, you can now enjoy the exploitative nature of exclusively licensed, cult films in the comfort of your own home with "WELCOME TO THE GRINDHOUSE".

This Double Feature contains:

Well, at least one of these ladies has a licence to thrill!4
Here's another 70's exploitation fan favorite that flew under the official DVD radar and went OOP almost overnight. Of course, the film I'm talking about is Lee Frost's "Policewomen"! This was previously released in full-screen format from a different DVD label which cropped out some of the action on the sides. BCI/Eclipse who fell victim to last year's recession answered fan's requests and gave this minor gem a remastered/anamorphic widescreen treatment that it deserves. Unfortunately, it was put together in this Grindhouse double feature disc so there isn't any special features. IMO, it's not a big deal because "Policewomen" isn't a great exploitation film but it stands out for all the right reasons.

First, I'll give a quick genre movie history lesson. "Policewomen" falls into the exploitation category of a 70's drive-in film. This means the approach is a little more on the safe side and the production values are not as sleazy as a Grindhouse film. Don't worry, Lee Frost throws in a good amount of all the exploitable elements that's to be expected. Nudity, sexy women in colorful bikinis, shoot-outs, car chases, explosions, cat-fights and humorous un-pc dialog is peppered throughout the film. Sondra Currie was a great choice for the lead role because she plays the character fun and is great to look at. The film's biggest flaw is that it doesn't feel as exciting as it intended to be. It's still solid fun in the way old-school low budget films entertained, especially if you can find the unintended comedy in some of the key scenes. It deserves a lot of credit because it accomplished a simple goal to give the audience what they paid to see. Take a look at other 70's female drive-in action films that are terrible such as "Scorchy", "Superchick", "Hustler Squad" and the companion feature on this disc "Las Vegas Lady" and you'll see what I mean.

Is "Policewomen" the best place to start if you're new to Grindhouse movies? Probably not, but the idea to understand the movie theater format and the formula of consistent elements that are found in exploitation films is definitely on this disc. We get trailers that are congruent with the themes of the main attraction and retro movie theater ads in-between features. Too bad this DVD is no longer readily available but I guess this was only meant for a small population of appreciative collectors. "Policewomen" gets three stars and "Las Vegas Lady" gets one as it plays it too safe and turns out to be boring tripe that might as well came from a Hollywood production. If you're a fan of "Policewomen" this disc is the official one to own.

    Not very cheesy, but boring!2
So I too after seeing "Planet Terror" and "Death Proof" wanted to check out some authentic "Grindhouse". I hope most of the other movies are better than these ones!

First off. Neither one of these movies "looks" like a Gindhouse movie. Both have held up very well over the years and are pretty much crystal clear. Both movies have decent acting, and directing. Also the cinematography and sreenplays are decent. Mind you they're not going to win any academy awards for any of these things but they are decent. Both movies have believable plots that make sense. Sure they get a little far fetched at times but there's nothing wrong with that.

I liked "Police Women" better than "Las Vegas Lady" Police Women was a little more interesting but both films are very boring when it's all said and done. I guess I'm wondering what makes these movies "Grindhouse". Other than the fact that maybe they did actually open in a Grindhouse theater back in the 70's. I don't see what's being exploited in either one of these films. Police Women has minimal T&A. I think 4 quick scenes. The second film has no nudity at all. Bottom line, both these films are just BORING. I strongly recommend one of the other Grinhouse titles.
