Customer Reviews
Works great, but only if you are willing to turn off the atomic clock sync feature...
I purchased one of these at a deep discount at a local store, and it works pretty well aside from one obnoxious issue: if you have it set to automatically sync the time to the atomic clock, the unit sometimes freezes at midnight, and the only way to unfreeze it is to remove the batteries from it and from the outdoor wireless sensors to "reboot" the system. Read on...
When you power up the system for the first time (or after it freezes up), you have to follow a strict procedure: First, make sure all batteries are removed for 60 seconds. Then insert the batteries into the first temperature sensor, then within 30 seconds, insert the batteries into the base unit. If you have additional sensors which I do, as soon as the signal is detected, you have to insert the batteries into the additional sensors within 10 seconds of the previous one. If there are any transmission problems, you have to take out all of the batteries and start over.
You can see how annoying this is to have to do when the unit freezes up on you. I live only an hour or so away from the atomic clock in Boulder that this unit uses to sync the time with, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I found that the only way to avoid the periodic freeze-up of the unit is to turn OFF the setting to automatically sync the time. Others on the web have the same issue, and tech support did not offer me any solutions that worked until I found the solution on my own. I wish the unit would be able to just skip around the issue and continue to work as normal... if it can't find the atomic clock signal for some reason, just skip the sync and continue to operate... no reason to completely freeze up!
Other than that, the unit performs well. It comes with one remote temperature sensor, but you can add up to 3 total (I have two of them). The unit looks nice on my wall... the combination black and stainless steel-look goes well with all of the appliances in my kitchen. Overall, not bad for the price, if you can deal with not having the auto-sync with the atomic clock.
Please see my review of the outdoor sensor that comes with this unit here.
Setting up and using LaCrosse
I have had the La Crosse WS-7017U-IT Wireless weather station for a few weeks now. It was easy to set up and use. No problems of any kind with it. I would highly recommend it.
