Pure genius!
Piano enthusiasts should definitely check out this latest CD of Mordecai Shehori - entitled "Celebrated New York Concerts Vol 2" (released 2007 on the Cembal d'Amour label) - and featuring live recordings of Beethoven Op 111, Rachmaninov Moments Musicaux Op 16, Kabalevsky Sonata No 3, and Liszt Dante Sonata.
I have compared numerous versions of the Rachmaninoff Moments Musicaux Op 16 (including those of Berman, Ashkenazy, Lugnasky, Biret, etc.) and Shehori's phenomenal rendition surpasses all of them. It is probably worth buying this CD for the Rachmaninoff alone! In my estimation, this is a landmark recording that deserves reference status...
And here's an interesting factoid - Shehori happened to be a good friend of Vladimir Horowitz, and was handpicked to rehearse with Horowitz the Mozart Piano Concerto K488 in February 1987. Shehori played the orchestral reduction for piano, with Horowitz performing the solo part (this took place in Steinway's basement in New York City). This rehearsal was to prepare Horowitz for his Deutsche Grammophon studio recording of the K488 concerto in Milan (with the La Scala Orchestra conducted by Giulini).
In a recent blind listening test (conducted in a popular Yahoo piano forum), Shehori's Rachmaninoff Moments Musicaux were described as "heavenly" and picked by knowledgeable connoisseurs as the work of Emil Gilels, Shura Cherkassky, or Vladimir Horowitz !
This will give you some idea of the extraordinary calibre of the playing on this disc...
To sum up, this latest CD album of Mordecai Shehori - "Celebrated New York Concerts Volume II" - is a remarkable achievement.
A must have for pianophiles everywhere!
Shehori is not a household name, but he should be.
(PS: I acquired a whole bunch of other CDs recorded by Mordecai Shehori at the same time I ordered this album. I then spent the better part of a week's evenings comparing Mr. Shehori's performances with those of some of the keyboard giants of our time, and with lesser talents propelled to superstar status by big company publicity machines. Shehori's interpretations often come out on top.)
