Designed by internationally acclaimed designer Neil Poulton, the Hard Disk features sleek and sophisticated styling. The case is entirely black with a fashionable, mirror-polished finish. A cool, blue LED strip on the bottom casts an ambient glow. The ultra-minimalist look will blend perfectly into home entertainment setups and workstations.
But don't think the design is just about looking good. Built to optimize heat dissipation so that it can operate without a fan, the drive is also designed for convenience and portability. At just 4.6 x 1.8 x 7.6 inches (WxHxD) and weighing barely two pounds, it can be easily transported into your briefcase, allowing you to shuttle files between your home and office, or move your work between your laptop and desktop with ease.
More Space for More Media
With an additional 750 GB of disk space, the Hard Disk can store up to 52 hours of DV video or 202,000 songs or 825,000 photos. Instead of having all this data stored on an internal drive on your desktop computer that can't be moved around, imagine being able to carry your entire digital media collection with you on your travels. You can also use the drive to back up your computer files for extra security.
Fast Performance and Exceptional Compatibility
Using the universal and fast USB 2.0 interface, which offers a transfer rate of up to 480 Mbps, this drive will work with both Macs and PCs. Just plug it in and play it. The drive is pre-formatted for use across Windows and Macs, doesn't require any additional drivers, and is ready to go seconds after being removed from the box. The drive features a rotational speed of 7200 RPM and has a cache of at least 8 MB, providing performance that won't keep you waiting for your files to backup or your media to play.

Free One-Year Unlimited Backup Service
With the purchase of this LaCie Hard Disk, you will also receive a full year of LaCie's Online Backup service. With this service, the data that you store on your computer will be encrypted twice and uploaded to the offsite data center where they will remain encrypted, maintaining your privacy.
When you sign up for the service, software is added to your computer that looks for new and changed files to update. The service is completely automated and only backs up new and modified files when your computer is idle, so you don't have to do a thing, and your computer's performance will never be affected.
This service lets you upload an unlimited amount of photos, music, video, and documents for a full year. After that you can continue with the service for a low monthly fee. This is LaCie's way of ensuring that should anything happen to your Hard Disk -- should it get stolen or damaged, for instance -- your invaluable data will remain completely protected and accessible.
The LaCie 750 GB USB 2.0 Hard Disk, Design by Neil Poulton is backed by a 2-year limited warranty.

Beautiful & solid design
This was purchased as external backup - it's quiet and lovely. The blue LED reflects off the surface (desktop) so you know when it's in use. Easy to use backup software included, but not robust enough for a power user or tech-geek (use cobian!).
The USB cable is kinda short, about 8", so if you're not planning on placing this directly next to or on the box you're backing up plan to purchase or use a different USB cable.
Overally good yet needs to be better to be the sole back up drive, 3.5 stars
I have bought this drive over a month ago. The first item I have bought turned out to be DOA. I have called the customer service and could not be happier, they were lightning fast to take my call. If you have any problems, my suggestion would be to call them. However, since I bought the drive through Amazon, I decided to take advantage of their exchange offer which I thought would be faster. Second drive arrived very quickly. As of today, I have been running this drive 24/7 most of the time (most drives die within a few months if they have manufacturing problems - I wanted to initiate kind of a "burn" test to see if anything was wrong with it) and I have not had any problems with it.
With all this said, I am not a big fan of Samsung drives which this unit contains. And the fact that the first drive was DOA just made me a little more nervous. I can not rely on this as my sole back up drive. I keep my precious data on my 320gb Maxtor which has endured many 3-4 feet falls over the span of 5 years and this Lacie serves as a 2nd back up.
Unit runs relatively cool and quiet, just remember to put it on a solid surface because the bottom is responsible for heat dissipation. For example, if you put it on your bed, it will turn into a fireball pretty quickly.
Case looks very cool, and keep in mind that all external drives are more prone to failure than internal drives. I suggest you buy this through Amazon thus allowing you to exchange/return easily if you have any problems with it.
As for me, I wait before if this thing lasts a few trips in a luggage and runs 24/7 for another 3-4 months before I upgrade it to keep more important data.
LaCie 301304U
I attached this 1-TB USB external drive to my 2.8 ghtz IMac. The setup was a snap, but the included utilities wanted to take the whole drive as a single partition. I used the Mac's disk utilities, and created two partitions. This way, one partition can now be used for Time Machine (which by the way, will keep backing up until the disk is full, then begins deleting the oldest files), and another partition that is used to back up my Linux server.
The rest of the setup was fast. The Mac found the drive quickly, and so did Time Machine. The Time Machine software asked me which partition I wanted to use, and once that was decided on, Time Machine took off, and has been backing up ever since. How simple is that?
Also, most of the specs I read on this drive show a cache of 16 mb, but the drive as delivered, much to my pleasant surprise, has a cache of 32 mb. Even with the USB connection (I think firewire, which is available on some other La Cie drives, is about 15% faster), I found the file transfer time more than acceptable. I have run video from the drive with no issues. Also, I often transfer rather large photo files, and graphic images to and from the drive, and again no issues.
All that being said, for the money, the drive is hard to beat.
