Ellery Queen, Classic American Television
Literary Critic Anthony Boucher famously wrote, "that Ellery Queen is the American detective story," and to that i would add, that Ellery Queen the 1975 series produced by Levinson and Link (Columbo, Murder She Wrote), Is classic mystery at its best! The series which showcases what must be re-
guarded as the definitive characterization of both Ellery Queen (Jim Hutton) and Inspector Richard Queen (David Wayne), sadly ran for just twenty-two episodes and a pilot. The episodes are well written and well acted, and for fans of the Queen stories there is a fine adaptation of "The Adventure of the Mad Tea Party, a trip to Wrightsville, and even a trip to Hollywood in the Adventure of the Sinsister Scenario! (art imitating art there) The series is set in 1947, and in many ways harkens back to its successful network radio predecessor (the adventures of Ellery Queen), even one of that shows announcers, a certain Burt Parks, makes an appearace in The Adventure of Miss Aggies Farwell Performance!
Fans of the Queen novels and the radio series will also enjoy the challenge to the viewer. Near the end of each episode, Hutton will look into the camera and adress the audience, hinting at vital clues which hold the key to the mystery and challenging viewers to solve the puzzel.
Another delight to this series is the character of Simon Brimmer. Played by a pre-Higgins John Hillerman, Brimmer is a radio slueth who considers himself a genuine criminologist, and conseqeuntly involves himself in a number of Ellery`s cases. He is cultered, egotistical, and usually way off base in his conclusions.
Anyone who enjoys mystey would enjoy this well made series, and I certianly encourage Universal to consider a release. Here is a list of episode titles:

TRUE?
If it is true that Universal Studios has no interest at all in ever releasing the Jim Hutton Ellery Queen series, then someone(s) have to shake them up!
An email campaign might do it, but it will probably take thousands of emails to do it, and they will have to come in within a relatively short time-frame---not over several years!
I would be willing to wager that just about ANYONE who has seen this series, while it only ran a single season, would believe it is certainly more worthy of release than at least HALF of the series that have been put on DVD already!
Who is with me???
The studio really needs to put out an official copy!!
I have seen the unofficial copy of this advertised on the internet for a long time. That version finally showed up at my local library. The version is watchable but I really want this series in a clean copy. Please Universal!! This series really deserved a longer run and I think all mystery fans would like to get their hands on a Studio issued set.
