See how the NST2036 measures up against other trimmers when it comes to cut rates and power output.
Black & Decker's Trimmers: Power, Precision, and Performance
Black & Decker offers a full line of electric and cordless grass trimmers with cutting paths ranging from 9 to 14 inches. Packed with power to tackle tough weeds and grass, these trimmers are low noise and do not emit fumes.

Super-Charge Your Yard with the NST2036 Cordless String Trimmer
Now the company that invented cordless yard solutions brings you the first battery-powered string trimmer that delivers the performance of gas. Just imagine the freedom that cordless convenience can bring -- without the hassles of pull cords, spilled gas, tune-ups, or harmful emissions. With 36 volts of power and a newly designed, super-efficient motor that boasts a patented gear drive transmission, you’ll get all the torque you need for tough cutting with less noise and vibration than a traditional gas trimmer.

Gas vs. Electric: Black & Decker Changes the Rules
Many consumers own a gas-powered string trimmer because they don't think that electric string trimmers have the power to address their needs. But Black & Decker's 36-volt trimmer is a true breakthrough, offering the performance of a gas-powered string trimmer with the tidiness of a battery power source. This trimmer's removable high-output 36-volt NiCad battery features pro-grade cells with a total capacity of over 75 watt hours. That means it offers more than three times the energy of an 18-volt battery (as compared to HPB18-OPE 18-volt pack).

Gear drive transmission delivers power and no-stall torque for performance comparable to a gas trimmer.

Removable 36-volt battery delivers over 75 watt hours of power and is rechargeable.

Starts every time with the squeeze of a variable-speed trigger for gas-like control; lock-off button adds safety.

Rugged bump-feed head features heavy-duty .080-inch line and a 14-inch cutting path.
With a cut rate of 51 square feet per minute, this trimmer actually cuts faster than most consumer-grade gas units in recent testing. It quickly mows down your tallest weeds, giving you the power to trim along fences, houses, and landscape beds -- and because it's cordless, you don't have any extension cords or wires to trip you up or tie you down.

Feature-Packed and Ready to Work
The NST2036 has a 14-inch cutting swath, which is the largest ever for a cordless string trimmer -- but that's not its only claim to fame. It delivers real industry-leading performance, no-stall torque, and true efficiency for run time that will amaze and delight you, all from a battery that delivers hundreds of recharge cycles ... so it will last for years. This model easily covers even big yards with loads of trees and fences.

And in addition to all this power, the NST2036 is extremely easy to control. It has no frustrating cords to pull, but it starts every time with just a squeeze of the trigger; and this variable speed trigger allows for gas-like control, so you'll always receive just the right power for any application. A lock-off button prevents accidental starts, and the rugged bump-feed head stocks a heavy-duty dual .080-inch line. The telescoping shaft offers quick and simple height adjustment, and the auxiliary handle adjusts to various heights for comfort in all trimming positions -- for users of every size.

Best of all, the NST2036 is the first trimmer in its class to receive the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star certification for its charging system. With the NST2036 you'll save money on energy bills, and at the same time you can help prevent greenhouse gas emissions for a cleaner planet.

Amazon.com Product Description
The first trimmer in its class to receive the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star certification for its charging system, this efficient and environmentally friendly model from Black & Decker trims mowed areas on most 1/2-acre homesites, and is great for heavy-duty weed clearing and cutting. Powered by a longlasting 36-volt NiCad battery for robust performance that rivals gas, but without the mess and hassle, the NST2036 boasts a 14-inch cut path and speeds up to 7,500 RPM. In fact, it cuts more area per charge than any other cordless trimmer currently on the market, and yields impressive results even around tough areas like against fences, near gutter drains, or the perimeter of trees with large root bases. It's also very easy to operate, thanks to a host of helpful features like dual .080-inch lines for long life, a patented gear drive for the right amount of torque to handle thick, bushy grass and brush, and a variable speed trigger for optimum control. For additional comfort and stability, you can adjust the auxiliary handle to your height, and the telescoping shaft can also be extended to access whatever you're cutting. Finally, a bump feed system feeds the line on demand, and a shoulder strap helps ensure even distribution of weight. The NST2036 comes with a three-year warranty.

It is what it is!5
I have used many gas trimmers in the past. When I say many, I mean many. I actually used to own a landscape company where we used commercial grade 2 cycle gas trimmers by Stihl. I am no longer in that business, but still like to have equipment with some power. How anyone uses those trimmers with extension cords is beyond me. I decided I did not want a 2 cycle trimmer, so I turned to a 4 stroke version by Honda and then came across this 36v by Black and Decker. I was skeptical, but seeing how they give you a 30 day free trial, thought why not. Is it as or more powerful as a lot of gas trimmers out there? Yes it is. Is it as powerful as my 2 cycle commercial grade Stihl's I used to use? No it is not, but it is damn close. This thing is clean, environmentally friendly, healthier for me to use and maintenance free. Some low rating reviews are listed here as well, but if you really read them, it's almost like they own Southfork Ranch and trying to trim the property on one charge. Those people should not have purchased something like this to begin with. This product is not made for them. It has a ton of power to trim with ease through the toughest foliage and I can actually do my "average" size yard 2-3 times on one charge. This trimmer is NICE! I would recommend it to anyone with a nominal sized yard. Try it! Disagree with me; send it back with in 30 days and write your review.

A Problem with this Trimmer...1
First, let me start off by saying that this is a powerful tool, for a battery operated trimmer. In fact, it is the only .080 dual-line battery operated trimmer that I have ever seen. And, it is powerful enough to cut through almost any kind of overgrowth. However, I did have a problem that caused me to return the trimmer (actually two trimmers since I returned my first trimmer for an exchange and then had to return the replacement trimmer for a refund).

The first trimmer worked just fine for about 15 minutes. I was trimming along a fence, when it suddenly stopped working without any warning. After an overnight battery charge, I tried to use the trimmer again. At that point, it would only beep and the trimmer head would not turn. And, after holding down the trigger for a few seconds, the battery started smoking. Needless to say, I immediately called Amazon and requested a replacement. Amazon Customer Service was very helpful and walked me though the return process. I decided on a replacement rather than a refund, since trimmer (while it was working) was exactly what I had been looking for.

I received my replacement trimmer the very next week. I was very careful with that trimmer and it lasted almost two weeks. During those two weeks, I trimmed using the slowest speed possible. Under those conditions, I did not experience any problems whatsoever. However, at the end of the two weeks when I was trimming along the fence again, the trimmer stopped working. I charged the trimmer battery overnight, but it never worked again. That trimmer went back for a refund.

Both times when the trimmers died, I was trimming at about 1/2 to 3/4 full speed continuously for about 5-10 minutes. It is my impression that Black and Decker did not take into account the amount of current that would flow through the battery if someone used the trimmer like they would a gas trimmer. With both of my trimmers, the battery seems to have completely shorted out (that, or or the trimmer motor burned out). If you use the trimmer at slow speeds or don't continuously use higher speeds, you should be ok. But, if you decide to use the trimmer at higher speeds continuously for any length of time, you may experience a problem. I think Black and Decker should have installed a circuit breaker or fuse between the battery pack and the motor.

Powerfull!5
This baby's got some power! I got it the other day and I must say that I'm impressed. I had always used electric in the past and I have barrowed a gas one a time or two. But I moved into a new townhouse this winter and it doesn't have a garage, so I did not want to deal with the mess and hassle and smell of having gas in the basement and all that.

It is easy to use, I charged up the battery the night I got it and Saturday morning I popped in the battery and squeezed the trigger and off I went. I'm tall, so I was happy to see the shaft extends out so I don't have to bend over all the time. Nice! I had to get used to the veriable speed trigger. My old did not have that.

I must admit I was lazy this spring and let a few weeks go by before I got around to the lawn, so the grass was pretty tall. In the corner the grass was still wet from the rain the night before, but this thing tore right through it. With the wet grass and the power of this thing it was like turning the grass into a green smoothie. (note, wear long pants!)

The other thing that I had to get used to was bumping for additional line. One firm bump and the line returns to full cutting. I was just used the automatic feed on my old one (again, my lazy ways). But I like this now because I don't have to wait for the string trimmer to feed the line.

It was actually kind of fun to use, it cuts so much and so fast. Now I need my neighbor to give it back to me before this Saturday rolls around.

I'm glad I pulled the trigger to get this. I'm not the biggest eco-ranger in the world, but I guess this makes me a little greener and kind of off-sets my pick-up truck. Well, that is my my story anyway, atleast until I go hard core and install field turf!
