September 16, 2008: This video is excellent! I am a beginner sailor and have learned everything I need to know to feel confident sailing. I have crewed in the Sailboat races, and have my own laser. This video was helpful in improving my skills for both types of sailing. The format of the DVD is great for viewing multiple times. You can skip to whatever you need a refresher on. I highly recommend this DVD. Happy Sailing! ps. This is the only instructional video that I know of that was actually filmed in the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland! About the Actor
Gary's sailing career began 40 years ago on the Chesapeake Bay and though he has sailed elsewhere, it is still his favorite. He holds a USCG Inland Master Mariner License and is in his tenth year instructing for Chesapeake Sailing School. Gary has taught over 1000 people how to sail. He also teaches the various American Sailing Association courses on docking, cruising, piloting and celestial navigation, and has done corporate teambuilding on boats. Gary is a seasoned educator and passionate about the art of skillfully imparting sailing knowledge, patiently developing skills, and bolstering students confidence on the water. He has lived in Annapolis, Maryland for the last decade and is totally hooked on sailing, seamanship, and showing folks a great time on the Chesapeake. One of Gary's greatest joys is introducing people to the art of sailing.

Basic sailing Instruction
This is an excellent DVD for learning an overview of sailing, the terminology, and the concepts of how a boat reacts to wind direction. All of the mechanics of actually operating a sailboat are first explained in a classroam setting and then demonstrated out on the water. I particularily liked the fact that Gary does his instruction single handed so you can see how one person can raise the sails, and go through all of the steps of sailing and operating the boat when alone. All of the key maneuvers such as tacking, gybing, etc. are demonstrated several times to reinforce each point. Most of the video is on the water footage. I have viewed two other basic sailing DVDs and this is by far the best and most recently produced (2008) If you watch this before starting your sailing lessons, it will be much easier to learn because you will know what to expect.

Great lessons
I don't understand why people are complaining about production value. The production value is on par for an educational video. The lessons are great. He goes over all the important methods very thoroughly.
