Simply The Best.....
I recently purchased a MacBook and was looking for a proper dvd burner for it and this is it. Fire wire.... 20X might as well say 200X because it is super fast.. burns a 4 gig dvd in about 10 minutes.. CD in about 1 min or less... If you burn alot of DVD's or CD's this is a must have for Mac owners....
LaCie 301196U DVD/CD/Lightscribe Label Burner for iMac
LaCie, pronounced LAH-SEE, French for The Company. I have an iMac desktop with Tiger 10.4.11 and this is my first experience with any LaCie external drive or any Lightscribe labeling and I like them both..... I actually bought this little unit for the Lightscribe feature only but i like all of the other features too, read, write, burning ,etc... it really beats my Sharpie pen too, and so much neater...... at first I was somewhat disappointed because when I went to burn my first Lightscribe Label on to a blank DVD, I got an error message that there is a communication error.... oh brother !! here we go..... anyway, I tried to call LaCie but of course there is no toll free number so the call is on my nickel... and of course I got in touch with a computer that put me on eternal hold.... so then i emailed them my problem... had to wait for one business day for a response.... however the response cured my problem... what they didn't tell me in the instruction manual, in the first place, is that after you install the LaCie Driver and Label Program CD, that comes with the unit, is that you really must go to www.lightscribe.com website and download their free software lightscribe system revision update...... that's not LaCie's thing..... that's Lightscribe's thing..... anyway also be sure and use Verbatim brand lightscribe DVD's and CDs..... that's what is highly recommended by LaCie.... and to me the Verbatim Lightscribe disk don't seem to be any more expensive than standard old plain disk CD or DVD... I'm happy about that too.... I have also watched a DVD movie and also burned a music CD.... If you want to, you can also burn a lightscribe label before you burn any data, music, video, etc... This LaCie is really a nice unit.... and fast write speed too.... it comes with a Firewire 400 cable and my iMac was already set up for it.... just plug and play on mine... neat..... just make sure that you already have the 400 Firewire connection on the back of your Mac computer and if so...... I recommend this unit.... and you can throw away that Sharpie pen too... UPDATE...4 days later.... I just burned a one hour and fifteen minute vacation movie that I made on my iDVD program and it took about 3 hours of burning to complete and that is about an hour or two faster than when i use the built-in iMac DVD/CD burner....... I then flipped the DVD over and burned the Lightscribe label on the DVD and it took about 20 minutes of burning.... anyway, I'm happy.... regards
Couldn't get it to work
I spent a good 8 hours trying to get this running on a 2 month old Macbook running OS 10.5.4 with 2GB memory. DVD's played from drive and the burning software opened, but I could not get software to locate the drive to burn anything. I downloaded software updates from website, but still no go. Contacted LaCie support via email who responded same day with a list of three updates to download in a specific order, re-booting after first but not second, etc....If that didn't work, which it didn't, they suggested trashing program that I installed from the disc supplied with burner, and re-installing the whole thing vie LaCie website internet download. Tried that but still couldn't get it burning/printing anything. So I wasted the better part of a day. I'm also bugged by LaCie support telling me I had to use one specific brand of disc, as some other (very reputable) brands might not work well or at all. I tried their suggested disc brand, which also didn't work, so I also wasted money on two packages of not-cheap discs. I don't think this is acceptable.
