Ground-breaking
Never in the history of cinema has a director tackled such controversial subject matter, as that of necrophilia, and attempted to portray it in such a beautifully erotic way.
German cult director Jorg Buttgereit has done just that with his film Nekromantik. His film tells the story of two deeply depraved individuals, Rob and his girlfriend Betty, who are obsessed with collecting human body parts, which they keep on display in formaldehyde sealed jars throughout their apartment. Rob works for a roadside accident cleaning company and is responsible for bagging the dead bodies of car wreak victims, which gives him the perfect opportunity to add to his collection. Not content with body parts alone, Rob surprises Betty by bringing home a bloated corpse. Betty is overjoyed and the couple decide to introduce the corpse into their sex life. All is good, but as time goes on Betty becomes enamored with the corpse. She leaves Rob and takes the corpse for her own sexual pleasures. Unable to cope with his loss, Rob travels a twisted road of sickness and self-abuse before finally finding salvation in this one of a kind movie ending you have to see to believe.
This film is not for the faint-of-heart, and is extremely graphic in depicting scenes of gore and necrophilia. However, if you are a fan of exploitation films this is a must see. This is the definitive DVD release of this film and it's loaded with extras, you will not be disappointed.
YUCK!!!!!!!
'Nekromantik' is a 1987 German horror movie directed by Jorg Buttgereit. It stars Daktari Lorenz, Beatrice Manowski, and Harold Lundt. Upon its released this film created a firestorm due to the graphic and disturbing content, and was subsequently banned. Over the years, In addition to being banned in several countries, it has built up a cult following due to the graphic nature and rarity of the film.
The story starts off with a very appropriate disclaimer stating that this movie contains disturbing imagery and is not intended for anyone under 18.
We then see a couple driving along a dark and lonely road at night. They seem to be lost, and when looking at the map, they suddenly wreck the car.
The next morning we see the gruesome aftermath of the wreck. We are then introduced to Rob(Lorenz)who works for an accident clean-up crew. Basically, it's Rob's job to clean up dead bodies after traffic accidents and such.
After a day's work we see Rob at his home. Very quickly we see that Rob is not quite normal, it seems that Rob collects 'items' from his work. We are then introduced to his girlfriend, Betty(Manowski)who shares Rob's morbid hobbies and interests, which is evident by her taking a bath in bloody water. These intro scenes work to introduce Rob, his girl and their mental state.
After a somewhat out of place scene that shows the accidental and unfortunate death of an unknown man, we see that Rob's team is cleaning up the remains. The body is decayed and putrid, but in one piece. Obsessed with having a whole corpse as opposed to body parts, Rob steels the corpse and takes it home to share with Betty. What ensues is best left to the imagination, but all things come to and end. Betty growing unsatified with Rob, leaves and takes the body with her, and Rob soon decends into morbid and brutal insanity.
This movie is freakin SICK!!! Make no mistake about it!! Jorg Buttgereit has a knack for making VERY disturbing films that are very artfully shot and usually have deeper meanings. The plot is pretty straight forward, and if one can look past the disturbing content, is about the mindset of Rob(and to an extent Betty). This is reletively speaking of course, One must be 'a few french fries short of a happy meal' to engage in this type of sexual behavior in the first place, and part of the plot explores why.
The acting is great, let's just say that there's alot of 'icky' things happening, and Lorenz and Manowski pull this off passionatly and realistically. The film at it's root is about Rob's wapred mind, and his mental breakdown. Once Betty breaks up with Rob his mental state declines rapidly, and Lorenz pulls this off convincingly well.
The editing and pace of the movie is good, however it being Buttgereit's style, it does have a slight 'arthouse' vibe to it that is slightly unbalanced with the shocking and graphic subject matter. The movie is Aprox. 75 min. and has a few scenes that drag a little, and again brings and arthouse vibe, but doesn't weigh down the movie overall. Rob has several daydreams throughout the film; they are vegue and abstract, but work to define his mind.
The cinematography is cheap and raw, but with these kind of movies it brings a 'you are there' feeling to the film; Being a low(no)budjet movie, some room can be given. When Rob and Betty are doing the 'nasty' the whole overall scene makes you feel like your in the room with them watching(ewwwww!!!)
The music and soundtrack is minimal, but adds to the realism. When music does play, it seems to be the same song, which reflects Rob's banality in life, and reflects his psyche.
If one can look passed the graphic nature of this film, we see the story of an isolated, meek man who is desperate to have conrol of his life. This could be what led Rob into his proffesion, and in turn led to his morbid 'collecting'.
WARNING: This film contains graphic and explicit scenes of necrophilia!! In addition, graphic scenes of a real rabbit being killed and skinned are littered throughout the film(Rob's daydreams). This is a facinating movie, but the content will be to much for some viewers. Discression is well advised!!
The DVD comes with loads of extras; including commentary(in German), making of featurettes, trailers for Buttgereits other films, and still galleries.
The release itself is quite rare. It's released through Barrel Entertainment, and was distributed for a reasonable price through the now defunct Exploitedcinema.com. I don't have any info. on where to get it for a reasonable price now.
If you like shocking cinema, and can find it, I recommend it, but for only the serious gore-hounds, and fans of extreme cinema!!
