RARE ROCK'N'ROLL RAMPAGE
Four discs-59,56,58,60 minutes each approximately, digitally remastered. The sound is clean and clear, but lacks the warmth of the original releases, which is a minor quibble when you consider that this music is relatively unheard and hard to find in today's world. Some of this music was being played (and recorded) before the time when R&R was fast becoming more well known and infiltrating the youth of the time. Bill Haley and others who are generally thought of as popularizing R&R were only the "name" groups playing this music. There are a few names that some listeners will recognize(The Treniers,Jimmy Cavallo, and Freddie Bell) and others that are relatively obscure. Don't be fooled into thinking that obscurity means no talent-there are many tracks that deserved to be heard by a wider audience. The overall sound and arrangements are obviously a product of their time. If you like fifties R&R mixed with a bit of R&B,you will find this to be treasure trove of good music. From small groups typical of R&R,to groups with horn back-up,this is quintessential fifties music heard on the car radio or on a juke box. Some of these groups had minor chart success and others were never that lucky. No matter-all these tracks have that certain "something",whether vocally or in the instrumentals sprinkled throughout. The one hundred tracks in this set are divided up among about a dozen or so groups. All of it is,for the fifties, unpretentious hard-hitting music. The booklet,as usual from the folks at Proper Records, gives a good overview of the artists and the times when this music was being laid down. All in all, anyone who likes this era of R&R would be advised to pick this up. And play it loud!
