Buy the 2 cd version instead!
I will be very brief in describing what I feel is a terrible disservice to Bob Dylan fans everywhere. To expect fans to shell out $100.00 or more for a 12 song bonus disc, and a small book with a collection of single cover photo's, that most fans will never look at again after one glance is outrageous. The alternative 2 cd set is a fabulous collection of unreleased gems at a fraction of the cost. You also get a very informative booklet with that set as well. My hunch here, is that in usual record company greed, they will release a new set sometime after the new year, that will have the third bonus disc included. By doing that, they will try to bait all those who already purchased the 2 cd set, but couldn't afford the deluxe set, into considering buying again. I will not fall for it, and neither should you. These are tough economic times, and for Dylan's record company to market a product to his fans in this fashion is a disgrace!!!!!!
the music and packaging is 5 star..the price=no star
yes..the price is a disgrace..what on earth sony are thinking is mind boggling..what is worse is there is a single disc version just to confuse everyone...why on earth sony didnt release this 3 disc version as the only version and retail it for 40 to 60 dollars is pathetic..HOWEVER,im sure its just as silly to give it a one star reveiw just because of the price..and have those who have canned this actually heard and seen it?? because the third disc is definetley 4 or 5 star...Marching to the city..why was this left of any album???, its a shuffling sleazy boogie number that should be heard and and and man the version of 'trying to get to heaven" is AWESOME..BEAUTIFUL..SENSATIONAL...as is the rest of the disc..and the lavish books have beautiful thick covers and lovely quality paper and printing...so please folks lets not let the price distract you as this is a truly awseome release..the packaging is beautiful and the music..well..its just wonderful..mississsipi..someday baby.an awesome slow haunting, much diferent CANT WAIT.and one of bobs greatest ever songs cross the green mountain...essential....
I Can't Stop Crying
My old dad, rest his soul, was quite a collector of Mr. D's work and he passed it on to me along with his collection. I too used to be a quite a collector of Bob Dylan's work, have a 250 gig hard drive full of his live stuff. I had a closet full of Dylan bootlegs, had another closet full of reel to reel tapes of live shows, had Spanish, French, British, Japanese and lots of other versions of lots of all of his records, even though the songs are the same. I had his records on vinyl, cassette, disc and even four and eight track tape, had concert posters galore. I even had a railroad train engineer's hat that says, "Blood on the Tracks" on it.
But sometime a while back it stopped being a hobby and became an obsession. I didn't realize it. It crept up on me. Then when Modern Times came out something happened. I started listening to the music, started to appreciate if for what it was and not just because I owned it and somebody else didn't.
It was like an epiphany, Modern Times was, and it hit me like that freight train Mr. D briefly mentions in the song "Simple Twist of Fate". I felt free. I went to that auction site and started selling off my collection. Now all of a sudden I was collecting something new, pictures of Benjamin Franklin, and my collection started growing and I'm ashamed to say how many of those pictures I wound up with in the end. Turns out collecting Dylan stuff was better than investing in gold, real estate or the stock market, well the stock market certainly, especially these days.
So, now I'm free of my vast collection of Dylan stuff, even that Blood on the Tracks train engineer hat. All gone and my bank account is fat. Very, very fat. I did, of course, keep all that music on my hard drive and I do listen to it on occasion, but with the exception of Blood on the Tracks, most of my Dylan listening these days his later stuff, because I really like the way his voice has mellowed. Oh Mercy, Time Out of Mind, Love & Theft and Modern Times are my favorite Dylan records now and I have them all in one iTunes playlist, along with the songs "Things Have Changed" and "Cross the Green Mountain" and they run randomly in the background when I'm not listening to Billie Holiday.
I didn't save anything, not a CD, DVD or any of the records or tapes. Then this set came out and Amazon sent me an e-mail telling me about it. I couldn't help myself, I checked it out. Of course I would have bought the regular CD set, but no way was I going to pay eighty bucks for that extra disc. No way, no way, no way.
But this is stuff from my favorite Dylan period, the kind of stuff I listen to now. Besides, I told myself, I could copy the tracks to my hard drive, then sell the set on that auction site and get most, if not all my money back. So I bought it.
The songs are great and mostly they work well together, except for all of the live tracks, save one and the two songs from World Gone Wrong, they don't really work here either. Don't get me wrong, they're great songs, especially "30-20 Blues", they just don't work in the context of this record, so I've added them both to my "Good as I Been to You/World Gone Wrong" iTunes playlist. The live song that really works for me here is "Ring Them Bells" from the Supper Club. I have a soundboard recording from this show and I thought it was great, but this is so much better, I'll probably never listen to that show again, now that I know what's missing from the quality.
Bottom line for me, if you pull the songs I've mention from this set from your playlist, you'll really have a Dylan album that's as good as anything he's ever done. So were the extra songs in this set worth the extra eighty bucks? Well, maybe. You do get two wonderful books with the set and that I didn't expect.
The first book starts off with a nice, concise history of Dylan Bootlegs, starting with GREAT WHITE WONDER and even has a photo of that famous and infamous album. It also has some photos of some other early boots. Then it goes on to talk about some great Dylan sessions and gives a brief rundown of each of the songs. And there are some great photos here.
The second book is called THE COLLECTED SINGLE SLEEVES and it is just that, a collection of the picture sleeves that covered those coveted 45 RPM singles that have come out over the years. It's a neat book to have.
I'm gonna keep this set. It's nice. It's also my whole Dylan collection now, but it's nice. Maybe I'll start up collecting again, who knows. I know this guy who's got an extra copy of GREAT WHITE WONDER.
In closing this rather long missive I'd like to say my favorite song from this set is the outstanding "Huck's Tune" from the Lucky You soundtrack. I have some very good friends who are very much in love. They lost their child recently. I loved that little boy, loved him like he was my own and I cried very hard when he left us. This song reminds me of him and his beautiful parents and I cry every time I hear it. I can't play it enough and I can't stop crying.
