The Conquering Heroes of 2008
Mother Mother's sophomore effort is the finest installment in the indie-rock canon since Yoshimi battled the pink robots. O My Heart glistens with meticulous production, thrills you with its unbelieveable attention to harmonic detail, and punishes you for thinking it was going to go in any direction other than where it chooses. Mother Mother jumps styles like it is their job, keeping the listener on his toes while never alientating him. "Bodies" and "Ghosting" are phenominal album tracks, while the title track is an appropriate lead single. The real gems, however, come in the album's most anachronistic tracks: "Hayloft" a churning, skeletal crunch pop tune that reminds you the blood still flows, and "Arms Tonight" a sickly sweet pop tune that ruminates on death as it takes you back to romantic high school summers. More than arguably the finest offering of any musical act of 2008, popular or independent.
Pleasantly Surprised
I bought this album after only hearing "Body of Years" a couple times on the radio, I thought that the album would have 1 or 2 other great songs and the rest might eventually grow on me, boy was I wrong. I was instantly addicted to it and the CD has only left the CD player in my car once (to be ripped onto my computer).
The band cleverly manages to disguise their dark and disturbing lyrics with catchy riffs and up tempo, often cheery beats. One of the things that makes this album so great is that you get something new with every song. Not only are the songs vastly different from one another, but the band is able to effortlessly speed up or slow down the tempo in any given song, which means you really have to listen to them in their entirety to get the full effect. With their vast musical instrument repertoire (similar to Arcade Fire), and the harmonizing trio of vocals they seem to have unlimited potential. If marketed correctly these guys could be Canada's next Metric.
Some standout songs: O My Heart, Body of Years, Body, Hayloft, Wrecking Ball, Arms Tonite.
The 70's comes to the 21st Century
I love this album! It reminds me of the best and most exciting music from the 70's. Also, it's the loudest CD I have ever heard! I have to turn down the volume on my car stereo to listen to it. Not loud musically, just louder in volume than others.
Anyway, the writing is great, the production is superb, the vocals and the arrangements too.
