Customer Reviews

A Fond Farewell5
Anyone who had the opportunity to see Dave McKenna playing solo in a saloon setting will invariably have worthwhile memories of the occasion. The busy left hand and the melodic right, rolling right at you. Tunes would just pour out, sometimes developing slowly, sometimes hitting their stride right out of the starting gate. Often one tune would lead into the next, sometimes for a whole set. Dave was famous for these medleys.

This recording is from May 18th, 1981 and was recorded at the Hamilton City Club in Hamilton, Ohio. The sound is quite good. The performance is stellar Dave Mckenna. There are 8 numbers on this disc and 5 of them are medleys. Total time is 70:31.

There are many solo recordings of Dave McKenna available today, a number of them on the Concord label. If you are a fan you will probably have a few already. This particular disc has a nice live feel to it. There is little audience noise and only between numbers. The piano is recorded well. The best thing about it is that, more than any other of his recordings, it feels and sounds just like an intimate live Dave McKenna performance, which was an absolutely wonderful place to be. Good-bye Dave. We'll miss you.
