To paraphrase from the title of a vintage jazz ballad, "It Was a Beautiful Three Days in August," when singer/songwriter Marilyn Scott fulfilled her long-held dream of recording an acoustic jazz album in New York City the way the legends used to do it - with the singer and musicians all cutting and working out arrangements together in the studio. Christened Every Time We Say Goodbye, the album is a dreamy throwback to a purer aesthetic that marks the 30th anniversary of Ms. Scott's impressively eclectic recording career - one in which she has successfully sung soul, pop, smooth jazz, adult contemporary and music for motion pictures. However, anyone who has listened to her CDs knows that jazz has been a prominent part of the foundation of her artistic architecture. So much so that she is the only vocalist in the history of Billboard magazine to have two different albums charting on the Contemporary Jazz and Traditional Jazz charts - simultaneously. Now on Every Time We Say Goodbye, Marilyn Scott is taking her love for jazz to new heights with a seasoned East Coast quintet led by acclaimed pianist Cyrus Chestnut, produced for the Japan-based Venus Records imprint by label president Tetsuo Hara and veteran jazz musician/producer Todd Barkan - his partner of 15 years. The 10-song repertoire is comprised of smoky wee hours standards such as the Cole Porter-penned title track, a Rio-kissed samba take on Irving Berlin's "I Got Lost in His Arms" and a blues walk through "Detour Ahead." The arrangements offer fresh nuances to familiar favorites as do Marilyn's artful and articulate vocal interpretations.

Customer Reviews

The album features her supremely jazz-literate but attractively intimate voice.4
If, like me, you're fed up with uninspiring, uninteresting music being pumped out by the majority of musicians and groups, the only advice I can give is to purchase this album and see what you think. After a few listens, I challenge anyone to honestly say they don't like it.
She is no novice at interpreting jazz standards.
On this new album, Marilyn continues her exploration of standard songs, which are all backed by a genuine, acoustic jazz quintet.
Cyrus Chestnut (piano), Paul Bollenback (guitar), Gerald Cannon (bass), Willie Jones III (drums), and Ken Peplowski (tenor sax/clarinet) provide the stellar musicianship to match the singer's once in a lifetime performance and rendering of the timeless classics.
The overall atmosphere is quite serene, allowing Marilyn's full-blown vocals to take the centre stage.
She does not indulge in unnecessary decoration or frosting of any kind. Marilyn lets her voice and her feeling for the music do the talking.
The album immediately enchants the listeners from the outset with the title track that Marilyn has created a classic recording and quite possibly this could be the pinnacle of her career thus far.
Her tone, confidence, and vocal timbre are superb and her accompaniment is at a very high level.
This is a fine album that manages to combine immediate accessibility with considerable subtlety.
I truly enjoyed every second.
My favourite tracks: "Every Time We Say Goodye", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose" and "I Got Lost in His Arms".

Exquisite Vocal Jazz!5
First of all, Marilyn Scott is a true musical treasure. As of now, I own 8 of her CDs, & I can tell you that she is an extremely talented and versatile singer. She is also a true musician, and an accomplished composer, lyricist & arranger. I also sense that she is a "musician's singer"...a vocalist who truly respects & appreciates wonderful musicians, & they feel the same towards her. She has surrounded herself with great musicians on all of her recordings, and that is certainly the case on this project. Another trait common throughout her work is her obvious love of melody, meaningful lyrics & jazz.
Although I will continue to enjoy all of her music, "Every Time We Say Goodbye" is the Marilyn Scott CD I have been waiting for. This is wonderful, acoustic jazz. The quintet backing her on every track includes great jazz musicians who are either legendary and/or are playing at the top of their profession. They wonderfully "frame" Marilyn's voice, which (perhaps more than ever before) is completely exposed in this setting. On these 10 timeless songs, Marilyn sings with great passion & warmth. The ballads such as the title cut, "Lonely Town", "Autumn In New York", and the bluesy "Cry Me A River" beautifully capture the vibe of an intimate late night jazz club. Also, the gentle swing added to classics like "Detour Ahead" & "I Got Lost In His Arms" will make you smile. And, the sophisticated rhythm of "Do You Know The Way To San Jose?" gives this more contemporary standard a cool new feel. The arrangements are great and every song is performed to perfection. Thank you Marilyn for continuing to make such enJOYable music!

Real Jazz4
Marilyn Scott has one of the most appealing voices in contemporary music: highly melodic, a hint of huskiness, very sensual and oh-so soulful. For most of her career, she has wrapped that voice around the pop-flavored side of jazz, working with folks like the Yellowjackets, Bobby Caldwell, George Duke and Michael Franks. She spent a large chunk of her career in the studios of southern California backing up others and singing on movie soundtracks, but her own recordings have been among the most compelling and rewarding of those lumped into the smooth jazz category.

With "Every Time We Say Goodbye," she tackles a setlist pulled from the Great American Songbook for a change. Most of the songs are well known and well worn, yet her sparkling voice and the fresh arrangements give new life to even the most time-battered tune. Her "Do You Know the Way to San Jose" is magnificent; "Detour Ahead" swings with more verve than is customary.

Ironically, "I Love Paris" sounds more like a typical "Caravan," while "Caravan" cooks with a funky edge rarely applied to that old warhorse. And though Cyrus Chestnut and Ken Peplowski are the big names in the band, it's guitarist Paul Bollenback who stands out the most, anchoring the disc with crisp chords and insinuating lines that take the proceedings to another level. Leonard Bernstein's "Somewhere" usually drags, but here is positively vibrant, thanks in large part to Bollenback's electric chordalities.

Marilyn Scott is a singer whose albums just keep getting better. Her venture into the familiar raises her cachet in the "real jazz" world.
