Editorial Reviews

Album Description
Though best known for his acting career, Costner is no stranger to the art of making music and songwriting. The band's history goes back some 20 years when Kevin first met band mate John Coinman in Los Angeles during an acting workshop. The two began playing and writing music together and soon after started a band called "Roving Boy." As Kevin's star began to rise, he was unable to devote much time to the band. However, he and some of the band members continued behind-the-scenes playing, writing, and recording anytime they could throughout the years.

A few years back the itch became stronger for Costner to start performing on a more regular basis. Costner recalls a performance back in August 2005 and remarks, "I remember looking out into the crowd, thinking `this just feels right'." And with that, his passion continued to grow with the end product of that passion being the debut album, Untold Truths.

Radio programmer, Scott Lindy was one of the first people to hear the new album and had this to say, "I know what you're thinking about when you hear Kevin's gonna put out an album of country music. I thought it too. But then I heard it, and I got it. He's not chasing fame here (do you really think he needs to?), he's following a passion. I couldn't keep this music off of the air."

The album is comprised of 12 original tracks all written or co-written by Kevin Costner & Modern West (Modern West is John Coinman, Blair Forward, Teddy Morgan, Larry Cobb and Park Chisolm). A 4-song sampler will be shipped to Country radio October 1 and will include tracks "Long Hot Night", "Hey Man What About You", "90 Miles An Hour" and "Superman 14." The track "Long Hot Night" will be available for download wherever digital music is sold starting 9/30. See below for album's complete track listing. The band will tour later this year and into early 2009 in support of the release.

Excellent Country CD5
I know what most people think when they hear an actor becoming a singer. What the hell?? If they are acting, and you've HEARD them sing before, i.e. Wayne Brady, then it's no surprise on what they sound like. But if it's Kevin Costner, all we've heard him do is pretty much act. But with Modern West, comes Kevin Costner. His voice...the only person I can compare it with is Joe Cocker's. Joe's voice is raspy and nothing like it. Kevin Costner's the same way. Some might hate this CD, and some may like it. Just give Kevin's voice a shot. The music is great. And I hardly love country music. And seriously, with most of Kevin Costner's movies, this music can find places in those movies. Great cd!

Pleasantly Surprised5
I bought this CD, just because. I didn't expect too much from it. Believe me; Amazon's 30-second sound bites don't deliver what this CD truly holds for its listeners. I have Costner's other CD (Roving Boy), and it was all right, pleasant enough, but not great. Untold truths is a huge departure from Roving Boy. Costner sounds good. Good arrangements. Good Lyrics. Nice instrumentation. A little bit country. A little bit rock and roll. I believe this CD will satisfy those who enjoy today's modern country sound, as well as those who love music in general. Very interesting CD that I will play a quite a lot. A big thumbs up!

Better than Waterworld3
While I usually rage against most Country music (Leann Rimes, Wynona Judd, and Mary Chapin Carpenter are the only ones who escape the wrath) I must say that the idea of Kevin Costner singing was intriguing enough for me to actually listen to this. While Costner is a premiere actor, he is not yet a premiere singer. But I did find that he can carry a tune, has a pretty good band, and overall the effort is decent. I guess a guy gets tired of winning Oscars, making millions for each movie, and golfing all the time, so he tried this. Good for you Kevin! The CMT biography actually says Costner and two of his bandmates have been at this for years. It shows, as a few of the tracks are pretty good, and Costner has always had a good ear for several inclusions on his film soundtracks. "Superman 14", "Long Hot Night", and "90 Miles an Hour" were my personal favorites. Please don't give up the films though. "The Guardian" was great- we need more films like that, instead of the usual Hollywood drivel.
