Disappointing entry in the successful series due to poor choice
I saw a tracklisting of trailers that were featured and didn't know what to expect because I was not familiar with most of the titles. As I was watching the trailers on this DVD I came to a rude awakening. This series is starting to run out of gas! This is the weakest volume. I didn't really like Volume 2 but I have to say it's slightly better than this one. Here's what went wrong.
The main problem is that most of the trailers are uninteresting or boring. There are too many grouped sets of films that don't belong in an exploitation trailer compilation such as the lame 70's dumb comedy genre that starred A-list actors like John Ritter, Peter Sellers & Steve Guttenberg? (Americathon, Undercover Heros, The Chicken Chronicles). There are five more dumb comedy films that made the cut. We get 70's Hollywood blockbuster action flicks with more A-list actors that starred Gene Hackman and Roger Moore (March or Die, Shout At The Devil). Other trailers that are a waste of time are the Native American and Canadian B-movie genre. The compilation ends on a bad note with trailers of teen dramas that contain no sleaze whatsoever (Best Friends, Our Winning Season, Coach and Goldengirl). It's evident by now that the limitations stem from a bias opinion and availability from the main source itself. Most of these trailers come from Crown International, AIP and Cannon films. The people in charge of selecting are also going by their taste and preference which is not going to encompass what a lot of other fans are interested in seeing.
On a positive note, I liked most of the Horror/Sci-Fi and the revenge/action genre sets. The few Blaxploitation flicks were also cool. Another bonus is the fun and informative commentary from the same team that did Volume 3. For the past couple of weeks that I've own this DVD, I can't say that I would recommend it. The longevity value is definitely not there since most of the trailers I'd rather skip. I'd say rent it if you can and you will see what a disappointment it is. I hope they are willing to go outside their boundary for Volume 5 and do a better job at selecting for the most part. If not, I say it's time to call it quits. There is probably no more fun trailers to dig up after four volumes and considering other Grindhouse trailer compilations from the past. Two thumbs down.
Trailer Highlights: Let's Scare Jessica To Death, It Came Without Warning, New Year's Evil, Humongous, The Soldier, Bonnie's Kids, The Klansman, The Boogeyman.
