The Final Season of an Epic Show
And so it ends, although there were of course two reunion sequels, one better than the other. This year was the last one for Dallas, and the cast departures for budget cuts translating to decreased ratings obviously reached it's breaking point. This season saw many players gone or with a reduced episode count, and the result was of course those viewers who were fans leaving. Despite this, I feel that anytime a soap is ending, it by definition won't be as fun as when it was going on. In retrospect, I think the only way to go was to have a sort of tragic finale where the remaining characters sort of faced their destiny. JR deals with losing everything, Bobby loses his new wife but gains Southfork, and Cliff Barnes finally gets control of Ewing Oil. The year is really about the tragedy of the two brothers as they slowly come to grips with losing much of all they ever thought was important in life-one being able to deal with it and the other not, in retrospect very well done. The series finale features JR and a devil played by Joel Grey visiting an alternate reality where JR was never born and many familiar faces from the past returned. Ultimately it is kind of a fun ride, but I must agree that it was rather unsatisfying as an ending. Fortunately we got the first reunion in 96, JR Returns, and that was a much better conclusion for fans of the show, and that will thankfully be released soon as well. So, for what it is, the last season of Dallas is really appropriate and as good as it could have been really. With Barbara Bel Geddes, Charlene Tilton, and Lesley Anne Down leaving and Barbara Stock added to the main title, also starring Jared Martin as Dusty Farlow, Gayle Hunnicut as Vanessa Beaumont, Clifton James as Duke Carlisle, and John Harkins as Control, with special appearances by Susan Lucci, Barbara Eden, Mary Crosby, Linda Gray, Joel Grey, Steve Kanaly, Jack Scalia, Ted Shackelford, and Joan Van Ark.
The final season of one of the greatest TV shows ever.
This dark Season 14 has some good drama and some good plots but also a couple of mediocre ones. The great Larry Hagman and the wonderful Barbara Eden team up together again this season as they were both great together in the 1960s TV show I DREAM OF JEANNIE. There are some good episodes this season as well as the excellent episode "The Decline and Fall of the Ewing Empire" when several of J.R.'s enemies get their long-awaited revenge.
There's the outlandish and lackluster plot of J.R. trapped in the asylum during this season's first three episodes, but it's counter-balanced by the action in Paris with Bobby, April and Shiela which has some great on-location filming in France. Once J.R. gets out of the asylum he is back to his wheeling and dealing and double-crosses. There's much action concerning Ewing Oil this season and J.R.'s old nemesis at last has his life-long dream come true. J.R. battles with Carter McKay (played by Oscar-winning movie veteran George Kennedy) who plots his revenge after he is blackmailed by nasty J.R. and his incriminating tape. Howard Keel makes an occasional appearance during the season but Barbara Bel Geddes is disappointingly absent throughout.
There's a good storyline where J.R. is busy manipulating behind-the-scenes and interfering in his son James and Michelle's lives and matters get ever more complicated when James' past unexpectedly catches up with him. There's some more on-location filming when the Ewing men go on a cattle drive on the Southfork range but when J.R. objects to Michelle going with them she gives him the zinger: "Good thing I'm not going because if I see you on a horse I might just laugh myself to death!" Bobby is much more interesting who has some good character development.
Patrick Duffy's son plays Mark Harris which is a nod to Patrick Duffy's character on "The Man from Atlantis" whose name was Mark Harris. Lee Ann's maiden name of Nelson is a nod to Larry Hagman's character Tony Nelson on "I dream of Jeannie". Just as the DALLAS TV series started with the first shot of Bobby in the first scene of the first episode, Leonard Katzman deliberately ended the series with a final shot of Bobby in the final scene of the final episode.
DALLAS ends with the bizarre two-part episode "Conundrum" of the light-hearted mystical journey in the "It's a Wonderful Life" slant of what life would have been like for the characters had there never been a J.R. Ewing. It also stars Mary Crosby (Kristin Sheperd), Linda Gray (Sue Ellen), Joel Grey (Adam), Steve Kanaly (Ray Krebbs), Jack Scalia (Nicholas Pearce), Ted Shackelford (Gary Ewing) and Joan Van Ark (Valene Ewing). DALLAS won the Soap Opera Digest Award for Best Prime Time Death Scene "April Ewing" for this season. The end of one of the best TV shows of all time.

356. CONUNDRUM (1) - The conclusion of the DALLAS TV series. In this two-part episode, J.R. is on the brink of despair, holding a gun to his own head, when he's visited by an other-worldly type named Adam. J.R. takes a tongue-in-cheek mystical journey in the "It's a Wonderful Life" slant and finds out what the lives of those around him would have been like had there never been a J.R. Ewing. With a wonderful sense of humor, the writers give us a world where Gary Ewing is a successful lawyer, Cliff Barnes is vice-president of the United States, Cally Harper is a battered wife, Bobby Ewing is a wandering loser, Sue Ellen Shepard is a thriving actress, and the other Ewing son is named Jason - and is a weasley little user and jerk.
357. CONUNDRUM (2) [DALLAS' milestone 357th and final episode] - Part two of J.R. taking a light-hearted mystical journey in the "It's a Wonderful Life" slant where J.R. finds out what the lives of those around him would have been like had there never been a J.R. Ewing. Finally, the two-parter - and the series - ends with a gun shot: Is J.R. really dead?
