Twelve inspired tunes from the 'new acoustic' Matt Flinner Trio. With the backdrop of the Rockies to inspire them, Matt Flinner, Ross Martin, and Eric Thorin threw down a challenge to one another to write a new tune each day while on tour and perform it that evening. The players each rose rapidly to meet the challenge, and the tunes composed over the course of three Western tours show the depth and inspiration of these performers. With MUSIC DU JOUR, the Matt Flinner Trio sets a new standard for the bluegrass trio configuration.

Nice twangy newgrass instrumental set
Matt Flinner Trio
"Music Du Jour"
(Compass Records, 2009)
---------------------------------------
A fun set of newgrass instrumentals, with bright, bouncy melodies featuring mandolinist Matt Flinner along with guitarist Ross Martin and bassist Eric Thorin. This playful trio keeps their sound simple and straightforward, with joyous, playful tunes and heartfelt performances. All three contribute new songs that are both inventive and restrained, firmly rooted in old-school bluegrass, but with a nice poppy lilt. This album is consistently fun and engaging. Nice to listen to! (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue Guide To Country Music)
Music du Jour = Too Cool!
In the past, I recognized that Matt Flinner had chops and could play really well, but I could never feel that connected to the songs on his cd's- I don't know why. But with this trio, they've struck absolute gold! Every single cut on this album is innovative in some way- whether it's letting the bass cut loose to storm/funk/rave all over the track or subtle blending and trading off on lead & rhythm parts or extremely imaginative improvisation & variations on the theme- this effort is PACKED from top to bottom! The various styles represented here is amazing and showcase the depth of each musician. This ensemble defines what a power trio can and should be. Way to go MFT! Let's have at least 5 more cd's like this one!
I would not expect less than excellent from Matt!
Matt Flinner is a mandolin musician who like others master mandolin musician, Mike Marshall, Sam Bush, Jesse McReynolds come to mind, never does anything less than his best and always pushes his limits, if he has any. Whether playing Bluegrass, Jazz or Classical you can go wrong with any of his cds.
This cd started with a tour where his Trio wrote songs for the concert played later in the day, and now have refined them for this cd. The music songs differ in style, genre, and arrangement, but each is a gem.
Highly recommended.
