Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Demi Lovato had lofty goals for Here We Go Again: "I wanted not only to make a great album, but I also want my music to inspire people, to help them get through whatever they're going through in their lives. That's the ultimate goal with every piece of music I make." On Here We Go Again, with ultra-personal songs like the irresistible, buoyant title track, the hard-rockin', sultry "Got Dynamite" and confessional pop perfection of "Solo," Demi met--and exceeded--her goals. The multi-talented 16-year-old became a household name thanks to TV smashes--her starring roles in the Disney Channel sitcom "Sonny With a Chance" and movie "Camp Rock"--but, Demi says emphatically, "music is my first love."
Demi also experimented with a few songs she ultimately felt were too mature lyrically or that she worried might be too pointed. "When I'm a little older, maybe my fans will be ready. But this album really expresses my writing and look right now. Fortunately, I haven't had to compromise in my career but you do learn more about yourself writing about your life and feelings. It's like a diary, and not everyone gets the opportunity to do something like this."
She also offers inspiring lyrics for her young listeners on the empowering and whisper-to-a-scream bounce of "Everything You're Not," singing, "I want a gentleman who treats me like a queen / I need respect, I need love, nothing in between." While there are songs about `lost love' on Here We Go Again, Demi says, "I think this new album is more hopeful than Don't Forget. This is like being excited about breaking up and making up."
About the Artist
On her 2008 debut album, Don't Forget, Demi collaborated with long-time friends and tour mates the Jonas Brothers, while Here We Go Again finds her branching out as a writer with such bold-faced names as John Mayer, "Torn" songwriter Anne Preven, and singer-songwriter Jon McLaughlin. She also writes again with Nick Jonas on the soulful, searching "Stop the World." Demi notes, "When I was younger, my influences were R&B, like Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight, and even Billie Holiday. More currently, my inspirations were John Mayer and Kelly Clarkson, so I wanted to combine the two, and hopefully we did that with this record. Of course, I was so excited to work with John Mayer."
Demi, who has written nearly 300 songs in her young life, was beyond thrilled to co-write with the Grammy winner on her second album. The pair worked up two songs in the studio, collaborating on words and music, with the winning, thoughtful ballad "World of Chances" landing on Here We Go Again, and a second tune saved for later. Likewise, she was excited to write "Every Time I Lie" and "Falling Over Me" with singer-songwriter Jon McLaughlin, admitting to being "totally star struck, but trying to act cool."
In addition to garnering fans among her musical peers, the press are also Lovato enthusiasts, the Boston Herald raving: "besides her pop-ready look, feisty dynamic and prowess on the guitar and piano, Lovato has a versatile voice that alternates between smoky tones and endearing cuteness." Yet Lovato, who wouldn't mind attending a music school like Berklee to study classical music and improve her guitar chops, is hard on herself admitting she's a perfectionist: "If the song isn't coming out right, I'll stop it." That said, Here we Go Again was written and recorded in three weeks with producer John Field (Rooney, Switchfoot, Jonas Brothers) who encouraged Demi to write songs like the spare, breathy "Catch Me," written in a rare quiet moment at home on guitar.
Looking to gain a different perspective on live performance, Demi repeatedly watched a Bruce Springsteen concert DVD. "Watching that DVD really helped," she admits. "Instead of worrying about what you look like, or if you hit the notes, it's understanding that people come to your concert to have fun with you and to experience your music with them. You're getting the opportunity to connect with every person all at once. Now I don't beat myself up if I hit a wrong chord on my guitar."
Customer Reviews
Lovato's second album is well-produced, awesome vocals and very enjoyable. Definitely recommended!
When I first listened to "Here We Go Again", the first single off her second album of the same title, I pretty much felt that we have seen this Disney-driven actress/singer blossom to a talented musical artist.
It's one thing to see Demi Lovato shine on "Camp Rock" and her debut album "Don't Forget" but the singer has said that this album is "more me" and that includes a sound that incorporates a Jonas Brothers and John Mayer sound.
Inspired by John Mayer, The Jonas Brothers and Jon McLaughlin, Lovato has collaborated with these talents and the end result is a fantastic sophomore album that easily eclipses her debut album in musical production but also vocally.
It's one thing to have a solid track "Here We Go Again" but she continues that rock/pop excitement with tracks such as "Solo", "Got Dynamite" and "Everything You're Not".
But she shines in tracks such as her acoustic guitar track "Catch Me" which she solely wrote, shines in the John Mayer collaboration with "World of Chances", the upbeat "Stop the World" track which she wrote with Jonas Brothers Nick Jonas and "Falling Over Me" which she collaborated with Jon McLaughlin.
Overall, Lovato has distanced herself from other Disney talent turned music artists with her latest album "Here We Go Again". She can act but she can also sing and she has positioned herself to become one of the prominent young singers in the musical scene today.
This album is definitely recommended!
A wonderful 2nd album
In her second Album Demi explores a lot of different music styles. Her rock is still intact, but she has a lot of nice slow pieces like "A world of chances." and "falling over me." Her voice is very strong and original, and it goes along nicely with all of her songs wither they are upbeat or mellow. She has also co-written quite a few of her songs. It is now one of my favorite albums and it is definitely a must for any of Demi's fans, who I'm sure will not be disappointed.
'Here We Go Again' With Another Great CD!!!!
1.Here We Go Again - The album is named after this song and has a music video to go along. I think it's really relative to if you're going through a rough relationship. And it has a really good beat and the lyrics are totally true. It just makes you want to sing along right away. This is one of my top #1 favorite songs off the album
2.Solo - This song starts off kinda slow but then as the song goes on it gets faster and more upbeat. This is a great song to think about after a breakup and it's beat is really good to dance to when your bored or your sad and want to be happy. I personally love this song...it's one of my favorites
3.U Got Nothin' On Me - I love the first part of the song because it's different and the beat gets you really hyper and ready to hear a good song. It something that everyone can sing along to and even if your not a Demi fan you still have to love the song. I also like this one
4.Falling Over Me - This is another song that starts off slow. We're used to Demi's music being rock and fast and this one shows another slower side to her music. I think anyone can relate to this song and the lyrics are so true in so many different situations. It features the amazing Jon McLaughin!
5.Quiet - This song is another that starts off slow. I love the beat because it's like slow and quiet and then all of a sudden it's gets loud and fast. This song is just the perfect song to sing at a concert and it's probably my second favorite song.
6.Catch Me - I think this song totally came from her song Don't Forget. It has the same beat if you really listen and it has basically the same topic. It's kinda like a part 2 to Don't Forget. I like it and the fact that she wrote a part 2 to Don't Forget.
7.Every Time You Lie - This song sounds like a jazz song you would here in a coffee shop or a small club or something. I love it it's something different than the music we here now it's going back to Jazz. Fourth favorite song
8.Got Dynamite - Got Dynamite is definitely rock and it seems so Demi. This song is definitely up her ally and that's why she sounds so good singing it.
9.Stop The World- This song was co-written by Nick Jonas and I love lyrics. Any lyrics Nick writes or help writes always sound so good when there song. I love the message hidden in it and I love the beat in it. I was really into it when I first heard it.
10.World of Chances - This song was written by Demi and John Mayor. It definitely says John Mayor in it. It's not really one of my favorite songs I mean I'm not really into it but I still thinks it's an ok song
11.Remember December - I love this song! This is my second #1 song off the album. This and Here We Go Again are tied. The beat makes it so easy to dance to. The lyrics are also fun. I love Demi's voice in this one it shows are strong her voice is
12.Everything You're Not - This is another start off slow song. I think that when Demi was singing this song she really got into it. It's just one of those songs that you kinda have to love. It's a really good song.
13.Gift of a Friend - I think this song is one of the slowest off the album. It's something we really wouldn't expect from Demi because it's so slow and she's usually fast and upbeat. But when you hear the song you love it. It shows she has a different side of her voice and shows that she's not all rock. This is my third favorite song because it's the truth and it's real.
14.So Far So Great - Is the theme song for Sonny With a Chance. Everyone loves to sing and dance along to this song. I love it.
