![]() | The Pushcart War by Jean Merrill
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01 The premise may seem weird upon picking this one up, but once you've read it, you'll give it to every other kid you can find who hasn't heard of it yet.
![]() | Oren Bell by Barbara Burgess
Buy used from: $0.01 This and its sequel, The Fred Field, are what is meant by timely, well-written children's LITERATURE. You'll love Oren and his family.
![]() | Grimbolds Other World by Nicholas Stuart Gray
Buy used from: $0.57 This British author is a little obscure, but truly worth a little looking around. Fairy-tale perfection and quirky originality in one mix.
![]() | Julie of the Wolves (HarperClassics) by Jean Craighead George
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $0.01 You may very well have already heard of this one, but I COULDN'T leave it out, could I?
![]() | Girl with Silver Eyes (R) by Willo Davis Roberts
Buy used from: $0.12 Another of my very own childhood favorites. I identified more with this character and the heroine of Goodbye Pink Pig (lower down in the list), than anyone else. They both epitomize the young introvert.
![]() | The Ghost in the Mirror (Lewis Barnavelt) by John Bellairs
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $0.01 This holds a place for every one of this author's books - it is my personal favorite, set in Pennsylvania Dutch country with a timetravel theme.
![]() | Ordinary Princess, The by M.M. Kaye
Buy used from: $0.72 No little girl should be without this one - it is beautiful, poetic, and as empowering as Pippi! (Which is saying a lot.)
![]() | Book of Dragons by Edith Nesbit
Buy used from: $0.01 This may be my favorite of this author's, or it might be another - they're all so GOOD! Also read all of Edward Eager's books, written in frankly admiring imitation of Nesbit's style.
![]() | Foster Mary by Celia Strang
Buy used from: $0.01 I have no idea how easy this one would be to find, but if you see it, get it. It's probably the most loving story I ever read.
![]() | Allegra Maud Goldman by Edith Konecky
Buy used from: $0.01 This book can never be replaced. It is perhaps the only "really, truly" FEMINIST novel for youngsters.
![]() | The Water Babies (Priory Classics) by Charles Kingsley
Buy used from: $0.01 This is great fun and great writing by a great man. It's really in a class by itself.
![]() | Silverwing/Fantasy by Kenneth Oppel
Buy used from: $0.01 A newish addition to the mini-genre of animal characters with human intelligence - like Cricket in Times Square. The trilogy begun here chronicles the continent-spanning quest of a small bat to save his people and unravel the mysteries of their mythology.
![]() | Wren to the Rescue by Sherwood Smith
Buy used from: $0.89 A terrific kids' fantasy, with all the right elements. If only there were sequels! [I have now found them - it is the trilogy I'd wished for]
![]() | The Four-Story Mistake by Elizabeth Enright
Buy used from: $0.01 My favorite book in my all-time favorite fictional FAMILY. I wish the Melendy family had adopted me! Set during the patriotic Forties against both city and country backgrounds.
![]() | Go Jump in the Pool! (Bruno & Boots) by Gordon Korman
Buy used from: $2.54 Nobody does kids' humor better than this fella. I Want to Go Home! and the YA books Don't Care High and Son of Interflux are my faves - worth going to used stores for, for sure!
![]() | Anastasia Krupnik by Lois Lowry
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $0.01 Looking for a super-high-quality looong series of books to get into? Every one of these is good. My fave is the second - Anastasia Again! Also read this author's book Rabble Starkey.

![]() | Tallahassee Higgins by Mary Downing Hahn
Buy new: $6.95 / Used from: $0.01 I haven't read all the author's books, but every one I have read has been exceptionally good, including Daphne's Book, The Jellyfish Season, Time for Andrew, and Wait Till Helen Comes.
![]() | Archer's Goon by Diana Wynne Jones
Buy used from: $12.10 This is probably my favorite of all her books, most of which I love, although there are a few I don't care for. Some of the others I really enjoy are Witch Week, Drowned Ammet, Time of the Ghost, Power of Three, and Howl's Magic Castle.
![]() | Support Your Local Wizard (So You Want to Be a Wizard, Deep Wizardry, High Wizardry) by Diane Duane
Buy used from: $0.01 These three, here in one volume, were the only ones available when I was a kid. Now the series has gone on, and I have not read all the new ones. Lots of fun, adventure, and character-building difficulties in a variety of phantasmagoric settings.
![]() | Great Brain,The by John D. Fitzgerald
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $0.88 There is a whole series of these, not all of which are equally easily available, but you should be able to get most of them cheaply. The main character's next oldest brother is too clever for his own good, and gets family, friends, and the whole small Western town mixed up in his labyrinthine plots. Set some time ago, perhaps near the turn of the 20th century.
![]() | Tales from Dimwood Forest Box Set (The Poppy Stories) by Avi
Buy used from: $27.00 These are great. More animal characters! The author may be familiar to you already - half the intermediate section seems to have "Avi" on the spine. I've not been interested in some of them, but I adore Poppy and especially her hilarious porcupine buddy.
![]() | The Wind in the Willows (Unabridged Classics) by Kenneth Grahame
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $1.38 The best, and perhaps one of the very first animal-character epic stories. That is a classic is not disputed, but have you actually read it? If not, you are letting yourself down.
![]() | AT THE BACK OF THE NORTH WIND (Barbour Christian Classics) by GEORGE MACDONALD
Buy used from: $4.57 Of course! Also the Princess & Goblins and Princess & Curdie books are very good.
![]() | Good Bye Pink Pig by C. S. Adler
Buy used from: $0.01 As mentioned above, one of the best examples in fiction of the quiet young dreamer, the one who is not very socially adept yet possesses an inner world of intensely felt imagery.
![]() | Blair's Nightmare by Zilpha Keatley Snyder
Buy new: $12.00 / Used from: $10.85 This is one of the series that starts with The Headless Cupid and continues with Janie's Private Eyes, The Famous Stanley Kidnapping Case, etc. Also wonderful is The Truth About Stone Hollow!

![]() | When the Boys Ran the House by Joan Carris
Buy used from: $0.01 My favorite of a series about a family of four sons. Pets, Vets & Marty Howard is another about them, and the slightly better-known book Witch-Cat is about a girl schoolmate.
![]() | Everyone Else's Parents said Yes by Paula Danziger
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $0.01 Another cute series - this one is almost as funny as "When the Boys..." Earth to Matthew is the third, and Make Like a Tree and Leave (which I have yet to acquire) is the second.
![]() | Brighty of the Grand Canyon by Marguerite Henry
Buy used from: $1.21 One of my very favorites from early on. Of course there are lots of books by this author and I haven't read them all, but this one would be great even if she'd never written another.
![]() | I, Trissy by Norma Mazer
Buy used from: $0.01 This is an incredible example of the diary format book. Trissy's father has moved out and given her a typewriter to write down the things that she should not say out loud. Trissy is eccentric, brilliant and very angry. An accurate picture of parental divorce. Also be SURE and read the novel "Silver" by the same author, which touches upon single parenthood and poverty, among other deep issues.
