Construction of the President's house began when the first cornerstone was laid in October of 1792. Although President George Washington oversaw the construction of the house, he never lived in it.

President Dwight Eisenhower had a putting green installed outside the Oval Office with a small sand trap on one side. A new practice green was located on the south grounds in 1996.

The White House was the largest house in the United States until after the Civil War.
