![]() | Schnittke: Cello Concerto No.2; In Memoriam
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $2.99 STRINGS
Rostropovich is the dedicatee of the Cello Concerto 2, but I recommend the Ivashkin over this recording, which is wrecked by the orchestra and "In Memoriam" -- both are way over the top.

![]() | Schnittke: Symphony No. 1
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $11.95 SYMPHONY NO. 1
A wild mocking work, and the beginning of Schnittke's "polystylism." I recommend Polyansky's cycle on Chandos, but he hasn't recorded the First yet.

|
![]() | Schnittke: Symphony 3
Buy used from: $9.50 SYMPHONY NO. 3
The Third is supposedly woven out of motifs representing Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner and many more German composers, but it's hard to detect them all. It opens with a long mystical section, and it has many lyrical passages that bely its reputation for strict formal constructionism.
