(1932) Boris Karloff stars as Imhotep, whose mummified remains are brought back to life. He disguises himself as an Egyptian named Ardath Bey, and attempts to reunite with his lost love, an ancient princess who has been reincarnated into a beautiful young woman.

In "The Mummy's Hand" (1940), the mummy is renamed Kharis, and is played for the only time by Tom Tyler. This film is more of a romantic comedy with horror elements than a straight horror film. In "The Mummy's Tomb" (1942), Lon Chaney, Jr. assumes the role of Kharis. A high priest brings Kharis to America to kill those responsible for desecrating his tomb.
